AD
Annindita Das Posted On : November 10th, 2020
M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) (Graduated 2018)

IIT Madras is ranked 1st by NIRF amongst top engineering colleges in India, while IIT Tirupati was recently established and hasn’t been ranked yet by NIRF. Various industry giants like Nasscom, Nokia, ISRO have collaborated with IIT madras for upskilling the students and funding the incubation centre.

ADMISSIONS and FEES:

Particulars

IIT Madras

IIT Tirupati

JEE Advanced Rank

2500-3500

1500-3000

Total Fees

8.82 LACS

8.64 LACS

Seat Intake

117

60

CURRICULUM:

  • IIT Tirupati CSE- Key subjects taught are Fundamentals of operating systems, communication and networking, analysis of algorithms along with modern technologies such as AI/IOT/ML/Blockchain.
  • IIT Madras Chemical- Subjects include thermodynamics, principles and calculations in chemistry, plant, process and product design, mass transfer and reactions along with other core subjects. The course also includes more than 10 labs clearing practical fundamentals as well.

PLACEMENTS:

IIT Madras

  • There were 136 PPOs, out of which 99 were accepted.
  • Students also received offers from 13 international companies including Micron Tech, Rubrik Inc, etc.
  • The placement percentage of BTech and MTech was 85.38% and 66.1% respectively.

IIT Tirupati

  • The placement percentage was 90%.
  • The top recruiters were TCS, Bosch, Versa Networks. L&T Group, and Honeywell.
  • The highest package and average packages were INR 22 LPA and INR 9.6 LPA respectively.

Here we compared two different courses and colleges with different alumni network and branding in the market, so it is tough to choose one over the other. No doubt IIT Madras has consistently been ranked amongst the top 3 colleges in the country, but IIT Tirupati is also making progress and has highly qualified faculty providing ample opportunities to excel in the field one chooses.

How is chemical engineering at IIT Kharagpur?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 28th, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

I will throw some light on the harsh reality of Chemical Engineering at IIT KGP or in India generally.

  • There is no quality Chemical engineering education in India.
  • There are NO private chemical engineering companies in India.
  • There isn’t a single Engineering college in India that has given any chemical engineers.
  • Most Engineering aspirants from top colleges pursue computer engineering to become software engineers. The companies visiting for placements are not interested in academic credentials but look for the TopCoder and GitHub profiles of the job applicants.
  • Others become Managers in the industry and start earning really well. The companies hiring managers depend largely on the past academic records of the candidates.

Chemical Engineering in India is almost non-existent and the job prospects of the same are nill.

What should I choose BITS Goa or NIT Surathkal for chemical engineering?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : September 16th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

One of my friends recently took a drop year just to get BITS Goa. It has always been his dream college and he is glad he left NIT for BITS Goa. Several factors combined helped him take this bold step. I have mentioned the core reasons below

  • Reputation: NIT Surathkal is considered among the top 3 NITs and is a very old institute. However, NTs are not at par with BITS in terms of reputation. Some might claim that BITS Goa is a new college but in reality, it's just an extension of the main campus.
  • Value of Degree: BITS Goa awards a BITS Pilani degree which is highly valued and not a BITS Goa degree.
  • Faculty: From what I have heard, NIT Surathkal Chemical Engineering faculty is worse than NIT Warangal and NIT Trichy. Most of the professors are inexperienced and unprofessional. In BITS, however, frequent faculty exchanges take place across campus. So, the faculty is common for all three campuses. There are even lectures from faculties of different campuses through a program called BITSS Connect.
  • Peer group: BITS has a very intellectual and refined crowd much better than NITs mainly because the college has no reservations policy, unlike NITs where seats are reserved by various quotas.
  • Placements: Core placements for branches like Chemical are almost the same everywhere. Usually, packages depend on your skills and the reputation of the college. Since BITS has a better brand value, it attracts better packages and recruiters. Additionally, BITS provides internship opportunities to its students called the practice school.
  • Academics:  BITS has a well-structured curriculum and a flexible campus life. There is a zero attendance policy however the tutorials in the class lectures form a part of the GPA. The best part here is the flexibility to choose your own courses and even timetable at your convenience. NITs lack such facilities and lack academic flexibility as well.

I think these points summarize well the fact that BITS Pilani is a far better choice than NIT Surathkal.

Should I prefer IIT Hyderabad mechanical or IIT Kanpur chemical? Please guide me.

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : May 20th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

One of my close friends is a third-year undergraduate student in the Department of chemical engineering at IIT Kanpur. After considering all the other choices that his rank allows he finally chose Chemical Engineering.

A majority of IITians take non-core jobs because of their easy availability and much better packages. If you are one of them, then definitely go for Chemical instead of Mechanical. This is because Chemical Engineering has a lesser workload and rigor in comparison to Mechanical, which gives you a lot of time to prepare for non-core jobs. However, it’s important to note that this is applicable only if you are targeting non-core jobs in finance or coding.

But if you are planning to go for Civil Services preferably IES, it’s better to opt for mechanical because you cannot prepare for IES along with chemical engineering.

For core jobs, going for an old IIT like IIT Kanpur is the safest and best you can make Hyderabad doesn't even stand a chance in that case.

48 LPA

Placement rate

53% (Chemical engineering)

99.14% (CSE)

Admission:

BITS Pilani Goa:

  • BITS Goa conducts an entrance exam namely BITSAT for admission in BE.
  • For admission in the Chemical engineering branch, 254 was the closing score in BITSAT 2019.
  • The branch offers only 60 seats, thus making the process highly competitive.

PES University:

  • Besides accepting K-CET and JEE main test scores, PES University conducts its own entrance exam- PESSAT for B.tech admission.
  • KCET rank under 450 andwas considered as a cutoff for B.tech CSE admission in the first round previous year.

For Chemical Engineering, St. Joseph Engineering College is average at best.

  • The lab facilities are decent. But you will have to follow many rules if you want to access the equipment.
  • The college is strict regarding its attendance rule. So, you will face problems, if you want to participate in events and extra-curricular activities.
  • The evaluation system is not good.

St. Joseph is a decent option for Chemical Engineering. But if you have better choices, go for them.
