How good is IIEST Shibpur?
I have been studying at IIEST Shibpur for a year. Here are some things I can tell you about my college from personal experience-
- Infrastructure- The college has good labs and internet facilities. The campus roads are in a good condition, and the number of hostels has increased.
- Academics- Most of the faculty members are supportive. They encourage research and innovation. IIEST has been signing MOU’s with various industries and educational institutions. It gets decent funding from the central government for various research projects. It invites eminent personalities from various fields to enlighten the students.
- Placements- IIEST is performing decently well in placements and rankings.
IIEST Shibpur is performing well in every aspect, and it is growing continuously. Long gone are the days when the institute was heavily influenced by political forces. At present, it is focused on delivering good academics, placements and research opportunities for its students.
Which should I choose? IIEST or NIT Sikkim?
Both IIEST and NIT Sikkim are excellent institutes for engineering in India. There are several aspects in which one of the two institutes is ahead of the other. The points below elaborate on those factors for both the institutes to give a brief overview of both the campuses.
- IIEST has a much better infrastructure than NIT Sikkim, being a much older and established institute. IIEST is the second oldest college in India. The buildings of IIEST are quite old. But, the overall campus is huge, consisting of all kinds of required facilities.
- NIT Sikkim is one of the new NITs, and so does not have a permanent campus. But, the temporary campus is worth living on. It has a view of mountains all around and is situated at a hill station. Even being a small campus, it is filled with required amenities.
- The hostels of NIT Sikkim have some problems due to their recent establishment. But, they are good overall, having spacious rooms and corridors.
- IIEST hostels are good too but are very old. They are not that well-maintained. But, you will get used to it eventually.
- Although NIT Sikkim is a new NIT, it has been showing good placement statistics in recent years. There are companies like the power grid, Intel, etc, that visit the campus for placement. According to the placement highlights of 2020, the average and highest CTC offered at the institute are 8 LPA and 18 LPA.
- The placement of IIEST is definitely very good with great packages for CSE, IT, and ECE branches. In 2020 the highest CTC offered by the institute was 39 LPA.
Overall, both the colleges are decent in their own aspects, providing several opportunities to students in fields of placement and research. It is on you to do good research about both, observe the key highlights, and then make a decision.
Why is there no recognition of JU, while IIEST Shibpur is quite well known?
If you’ll go out to top-notch research institutions and just shout out loud that I am from Jadavpur, you will get to see how many people come to meet you. And alternatively, if you’ll shout out loud something bad then see what happens. Just the same way, go to all IITs and do the same, you will find many students from Jadavpur University. Not only in the colleges, if you’ll go to some reputed organizations also, but you’ll also be able to find students from JU.
In fact, a very reputed Bhabha Atomic Research Center also has some scientists who are from Jadavpur University. Not only in the scientific field, but students from Jadavpur University are scattered in various other sectors also like literature, politics, businesses, and all around the world. It is really a pity if someone talks about the recognition of the university just because they have a lack of knowledge.
How good is IIEST Shibpur's MBA department, with respect to the faculty and placements?
My brother attended IIEST Shibpur. So, I know a little bit about the institute.
- The School of Management (SoM) is quite young considering its inception was just 15 years ago.
- As far as the faculty is concerned, they are all young, willing to learn, and are quite open to connecting with students.
- You see, the school is in fact a part of a larger science and technology institute. Thus, it is trying to offer various multi-disciplinary opportunities to students.
- On the other hand, you will find that the school also has a larger placement cell. Due to this, they have created a brand name that has a positive impact on students.
If you are one of those students who do not mind going beyond normal boundaries and learning beyond theory, want to gain practical knowledge, and try experimental learning, you should definitely go to IIEST SoM.
What are the expected closing ranks of various streams in IIEST Shibpur?
The expected closing ranks of various streams in IIEST Shibpur can vary from year to year depending on various factors such as the number of applicants, the difficulty level of the entrance exam, and the availability of seats. However, below are the previous year's closing ranks of various streams in IIEST Shibpur based on JEE Main exam:

Should I join IIEST Shibpur or NIT Allahabad?
If you're considering NIT Allahabad and IIEST Shibpur for CS, ETC, or IT branches, it's worth noting that NIT Allahabad has better placement records than IIEST Shibpur. However, for Mechanical, Electrical, or other branches, the placements are almost the same in both places, and IIEST is growing and improving.
IIEST Shibpur has a better record of research and academics, while NIT Allahabad has better placements and the advantage of being an NIT.
The infrastructure of both institutions is comparable, and IIEST's ranking is increasing, while NIT Allahabad's remains stagnant. Still, many students choose colleges based on existing cutoffs and ratings, even if a better-performing institution exists.
For now, NIT Allahabad may be the better choice due to its NIT tag, but keep in mind that a tag doesn't guarantee success in the corporate world. Ultimately, placements depend on the skills and training of the students.
In terms of ranking, the order would be top NITs (such as Warangal, Trichy, Rourkela, and Suratkhal), followed by IIEST Shibpur and NITs like Durgapur, Allahabad, VNIT Nagpur, Surat, and Kurukshetra. Lower NITs such as Jamshedpur, Hamirpur, Agartala, Silchar, and Sikkim would come next, with NIT Uttarakhand, Goa, Mizoram, etc., bringing up the rear.
Which one should I choose: chemical engineering at Jadavpur University or mechanical engineering in IIEST Shibpur?
Jadavpur University and IIEST Shibpur are both considered as one of the best institutes in India to pursue Engineering. Both fall under the top 50 institutes for engineering according to the NIRF ranking. Jadavpur University is considered to be a tier A university whereas Shibpur University is not that popular.
Discipline:
First of all, it is important for students to research the difference between mechanical and chemical engineering before choosing it for their career.
- Chemical Engineering (CE) deals with the oil industry, pharmaceutical companies, biomedical studies, metals, minerals and nanotechnology.
- Mechanical Engineering, on the other hand, includes applications in oil, pharmaceutical, metal, nanotechnology, semiconductors, automobiles and power plant equipment, etc.
Ranking:
IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University are both excellent colleges for education.
- Jadavpur University is one of the top graded A-tier universities in India however, IIEST holds more brand value because of its recent popularity and placements.
- Jadavpur University has been ranked at 12 out of 200 universities in India by NIRF ranking and the 2nd best university in Kolkata. IIEST Shibpur has been ranked at 43rd place in the same ranking.
Admission Cut-offs:
- The average general cut-off for Mechanical Engineering at IIEST Shibpur is 11669 - 19625 rank in JEE mains.
- Jadavpur University for chemical engineering requires 338-416 rank in JEE mains.
Placements:
- The placements offered at Jadavpur University are better for the reason that it has a better nationwide ranking and engages in campus recruitment programs. It had recently achieved a record of 84% placements in May 2020.
- IIEST mechanical engineering program had 71.93% placement for the year 2020. The top recruiter at JU includes Amazon, TCS, Bajaj, Microsoft, Adobe, BPCL whereas the top recruiters at IIEST include Accenture, Google, ITC, SBI, TATA etc.
The choice of University and course completely depends on the student’s interest and their JEE ranking. Both these subjects are relatively difficult to get but if the student is determined and smart at studying, nothing is unachievable.
In terms of teaching and placements for architecture, how good is IIEST Shibpur?
From the half-century of its existence, the newfound department of Architecture had produced 800 graduates in Architecture and 300 postgraduates in Town Planning.
NASA (National Association of Students of Architecture) was founded by the undergrad students collectively. The association is non-political and non-profitable. The department has a dynamic student’s body. Even its Alumni are spread across the world and the senior-junior relationship is wonderful.
Teaching:
- The professors are experienced, but they have a small ounce of work experience. So, their teaching lacks the upgraded trends and technologies that are being used in the present day. Even the syllabus is outdated.
- Most of the professors are not very student-friendly. It is better to maintain professionalism.
- Initially, the students find the college burdensome, but with time it is manageable. Most classes are held regularly.
Placement:
- There is hardly any placement assistance in this department. Students have to arrange the job/ internship for themselves.
- Construction companies that visit the campus are not interested in recruiting architecture students.
- Hardly 4-5 students get selected in MN Dastur. Although if a student has maintained a decent portfolio, they can get a job at lower packages.
IIEST Shibpur is one of the best colleges in eastern India in terms of infrastructure, campus, cultural fests (REBECA), and accommodation. The architecture department is the most active. Five years of architecture are packed with learning and growing.
Which is better, NIT Durgapur for CSE or IIEST Shibpur for CSE?
IIEST Shibpur is better for CSE. It offers better academics, and facilities. IIEST receives more funding than NIT Durgapur. It has a better peer group as well, which is clearly reflected on the cutoff.
The placement rate for CSE is around 80%. Students receive an average CTC of around INR 10 LPA. The highest CTC offered goes up to INR 39 LPA. Microsoft Media, Deutsch Bank, Mentor Graphics, Well Fargo’s, etc. are among the major recruiters that take place in the placement drive.
How was your first year at IIEST Shibpur?
My first year at IIEST Shibpur was full of new experiences.
I arrived at the campus on a Sunday. I had to share a room with three other B.Tech students. One of them was from CST like me, and the other two were from Mechanical. I was quite nervous about sharing a room with so many other people.
I was careless enough to not have checked the class schedule. On learning that our morning classes start at 8 am, I was a little shook. I wasn’t a morning person, so the thought of waking up that early was an unpleasant one.
For my first academic day at IIEST, I woke up by 6 am and got ready by 7:30 am. My friend and I attended the electronics class, mistaking it for our English lecture. We laughed a lot on our silly mistake, and went on attending the rest of the classes as per schedule, till 5 pm.
The seniors were friendly, given that one remained in their good books. My hostel friends and the time spent with them, is the most precious take away from IIEST for me. The first year schedule is quite grilling, and added to it are the PT classes. Regardless, I’ll always cherish the memories I made at IIEST Shibpur.
