Should I pursue civil engineering at IIT Indore or electrical engineering at IIT Patna?
Last year, my friend was in a similar dilemma and decided to seek help directly from a PhD student at IIT Indore. Surprisingly enough, the fellow's first question was if I had other options.
He explained that the CE branch here is new and lacks credibility yet. The labs aren’t well established and the seniors are equally clueless about the future. This helped my friend a lot as he then switched to IIT Patna EE and to date, he hasn’t regretted his decision even once as it is one of the best UG branches of IIT Patna.
- Choosing IIT Patna will give you a variety of options to opt for after 4 years in various fields like Core Electrical, Electronics, Coding, Open Source Development, Further Studies, and even Research.
- Being one of the oldest branches, it has a broad alumni pool that is making big contributions to society.
- The branch has the best labs such as the Advanced Electrical Lab, the Basic/Analog/Digital Lab, the Communication Lab, the Digital Signal Processing Lab, and so on.
- The branch has an actively operating Club called Sparkonics
- Like any other IIT, the professors are highly qualified and you cannot doubt their parity.
Lastly, don’t give up on IIT Indore just because it is in Patna. Irrespective of whichever city it belongs to an IIT will serve you the best!
How is B.Tech (Electrical) in PDPU?
Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) is one of the NAAC 'A' graded private universities settled in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The institute successfully bagged 177th rank by NIRF and counted among the top engineering colleges of India.

Both IIT D Electrical and IIT Madras Electrical courses are very well sought after by the students. Both of these institutes are well recognized for their strong and excellent curriculum on electrical engineering.

Which IIT is good for electrical engineering (if I am thinking of a branch change to CS afterward), IIT Mandi or IIT Jodhpur?
IIT Mandi is a good choice if you want to pursue electrical engineering and later change to CS afterward.
- The faculty of this department is great. They will guide you with everything and you will get to work with live projects.
- It is Ranked 33rd in the NIRF Ranking.
- The total fee is INR 10.19 Lakhs. In 2023, 93% of the total batch was placed.
- In 2023, the average salary was INR 24.58 LPA and the median salary was INR 21 LPA from this department.
- IIT Mandi has also developed a good reputation which attracts top recruiters like IBM, Accenture, Google, etc.
Which is better for a north Indian girl student: to study ECE in NIT Trichy or to study ECE in NIT Surathkal?
If you have the chance to study at NIT Trichy, then I will suggest that you take it. NIT Trichy is the best among all the NITs. The ECE department of NIT Trichy is well established. The curriculum has been designed with equal focus on theoretical and practical knowledge. You will get to experience the best time on the campus. The alumni connection of NIT Trichy is great and you will get to meet the best people in your field during the multiple workshops and seminars that are conducted. You will also be guided by the best faculty members who are always eager to guide their students towards progress and improvement. The placement record of this department is great. The majority of the students get placed at the top companies.
Which of the following would be better choice, an electrical at IIT Mandi, Jodhpur, Ropar, or a CSE at IIT Dharwad, Bhilai, Goa (specific interests computer science)?
You can go with the option of IIT Mandi. The recruiters from CSE offer high job packages every year to the students. IIT Mandi is the best place to change your branch to CSE, as it is one of the most competitive fields. You will be placed in a good company with high packages as a fresher in your favorite CSE field. When compared with the semi-new IITs, the best option would be Mandi. For other IITs, branch change might be a difficult task. Over the last three years, about 167 students got enrolled for placements; among them, 156 were placed. So IIT Mandi is a good choice.
What is better, metallurgical in the old IIT (Kharagpur/Roorkee) or electrical in the new IIT (Ganghinagar/Mandi)??
I was in the same position as you last year. I too had the same options for my Bachelor and I chose IIT Roorkee due to the following reasons:-
- Some of the older IITs like Roorkee boast a longer legacy and are highly esteemed for imparting quality engineering education.
- Opting for Metallurgical Engineering at one of these older IITs, if your interest lies in materials science or the manufacturing industry
- Metallurgical Engineering can open up distinctive career pathways in areas like metallurgy, mining, manufacturing, and even research.
- IIT Roorkee/Kharagpur is ranked 5th/6th in the NIRF ranking while IIT Gandhinagar/Mandi is Ranked 18th/33rd.
- IIT Roorkee Metallurgical branch has an Average Package of 21 LPA with IIT Gandhinagar/Mandi EE branch at 24 LPA.
- Old IITs have better infrastructure and college life as compared to new IITs.
What should we take, IIT Delhi Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) or IIT BHU CS?
Choosing IIT Delhi Electrical Engineering (Power and Automation) is better than choosing IIT BHU CS as:-
- IIT Delhi is one of the oldest IITs in the nation, it has developed a wonderful reputation for offering well well-structured academic curriculum and research opportunities for the students.
- The institution offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Electrical Engineering, with the average course fee for four years being around INR 10-8 Lakhs.
- The placement records for the department are also very good with around 80% of the students being placed.
- The highest package is INR 70 LPA and the average is INR 16 LPA.
BITS Pilani CSE or IIT Roorkee Electrical or IIT Kharagpur MnC or IIT Bombay Civil. What should I opt for?
I am a second year B.Tech Electrical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. The NIRF 2024 ranking of IIT Roorkee and other colleges is given below:
- IIT Bombay- 2
- IIT Kharagpur- 3
- IIT Roorkee- 6
- BITS Pilani- Not Available (2023 Ranking- 25)
Though all the options mentioned by you are equally good, I am mentioning below the highlights of B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee-
- The Electrical Engineering department of IIT Roorkee offers excellent placements. Top core, finance, and consulting companies visit the department for recruitments.
During 2023, IIT Roorkee recorded the highest package of INR 1.3 CPA, and the highest international package of INR 1.06 CPA. Total 63 recruiters visited the campus with 500 job offers. Some of the top recruiters for the placement season were- BCG, Bajaj Auto, Flipkart, and Tata Steel.
During 2024, Flipkart offered a package of INR 34 LPA, and the position of Software Developer. This offer was open to B.Tech CSE, Electrical and ECE students.
Myntra offered a INR 30 LPA package for the role of Software Development Engineer, and this offer was open to students of B.Tech (CSE, ECE, EE) & MSM. These are just two examples.
- Apart from placements, IIT Roorkee offers top class research facilities to its students.
- With the rise of technologies like IoT, AI, and renewable energy, electrical engineers are in high demand in the current market.
The choice would ultimately depend upon your goals and interests, but I can assure you that B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee will provide you with great academics, research opportunities, and placements.
What should I choose considering the branch change opportunities, electrical at IIT Mandi or electrical at IIT Ropar?
There is a branch change provision at IIT Mandi which is very lenient too. So if you are confused with your branch and you wish to change your branch in the future, then you should choose IIT Mandi.
One of my friends was in a similar situation a few years back and he opted for IIT Mandi for its flexible branch change policies. He was able to change his branch to CSE. To change your branch to CSE, you will need a CGPA of around 8.6.
IIT Mandi has a 50% branch change allowance whereas at IIT Roper it is 10%. To know more about the branch change rules you can visit the official website.
