Both IIT Indore and IIT Bhubaneswar are great institutions, famous for their high academic standards. However, as an IIT Indore student, I would say choosing IIT Indore for CSE is better than going for IIT Bhubaneswar.
IIT Indore ranked 13th in the Engineering Category by NIRF 2019. 51 companies participated in the placement of the year 2018-2019. Students in this year received an average salary package of 18 lakhs per annum which is higher than what they usually received, 16 lakhs per annum. In 2018, 99% of students received placements from reputed companies like Intel and L & T for Electrical Engineering.
Ranked 17th in the engineering category by NIRF 2019, IIT Bhubaneswar in 2019 has seen 86% placement in Electrical Engineering Department. With an Average Salary Package going up to 11 lakhs per annum and the highest being 39 lakhs per annum. Companies like TATA steel, TATA Advance System, Thermax, INTEL Technology, etc. were among the top recruiters participating in IIT Bhubaneswar.
If you have a better rank you can easily choose to study in IIT Indore than IIT Bhubaneswar due to its better ranking and placements. IIT Indore is a more reliable choice for Electrical Engineering than IIT Bhubaneswar.
I’ve looked into the placements for NIT Trichy B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and IIT Indore B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and it’s clear that NIT Trichy generally has the edge in terms of job prospects. They have a strong track record with tech giants and consistent on-campus internships, which really boost employability. IIT Indore offers great opportunities too, but the Metallurgical and Materials field can sometimes be niche, leading to fewer opportunities compared to the broader electrical field at NIT Trichy. If you’re aiming for a tech-focused career, NIT Trichy would be a safer bet, while IIT Indore might be better if you’re passionate about materials engineering and willing to navigate a more specialized job market.
Yes, IIT Indore is a decent option for bioinformatics and is expanding, but it is yet to become one of the premier national centres in this field.
| Parameter | IIT Indore | National Context |
|---|---|---|
| Programs Offered | M.Sc. & Ph.D. in Biotechnology (includes bioinformatics) | No B.Tech/M.Tech in bioinformatics |
| Ranking (NIRF 2024) | #16 in Engineering, #21 in Research | Strong overall, not top-tier for bioinformatics |
| Research Focus | Interdisciplinary, modern labs, active faculty | Competitive but behind older IITs & AIIMS/IISc |
| Placement in Field | Research-heavy; lower than CSE/EE | Decent in biotech; bioinformatics jobs limited nationwide |
| Student Rating | 4.2/5 (M.Sc. Biotechnology) | AIIMS Delhi: 4.5/5 (top for life sciences) |
IIT Indore has decent infrastructure, a robust research environment, and exposure to work on diverse domains in biotech and bioinformatics, particularly for M.Sc. and Ph.D. It's a very good choice that's gaining popularity.
But for specialized bioinformatics courses or industry exposure, IIT Bombay, IISc, or AIIMS Delhi are preferable.

IIT Indore doesn’t directly offer an MBA program. Instead, they provide a Master of Science in Data Science and Management programme (MSDSM), in collaboration with IIM Indore. The MBA interview questions are tailored for each candidate but generally focus on general background, strengths & weaknesses, motivation for joining the program, and future goals.
To be considered for the personal interview, the candidates have to score above a certain threshold as decided by the committee. The shortlisted candidates are then called for a personal interview. It is conducted by a joint committee with expert members from both IIT Indore and IIM Indore.
The faculty-to-student ratio is 13:20 which is pretty good for a new branch. The faculty to student relationship is really good with some of the faculties. Most of them are easily approachable and interactive. One of the faculty who is liked by almost all students including me is "Dr. Bhargav Vaidya" who is also my faculty advisor. He is not much strict, understands student's issues , teaches really well , has good amount of knowledge and is friendly with students. He is the type of professor we all need (students). The other faculties are Dr. Prakash Gaikwad, Dr. Suman Majumdar, Dr. Priyanka Singh and Dr. Abhirup Dutta , they are also one of the best faculties. The most disliked faculty according to me and my whole class is Dr. Soumavo Ghosh as he is kind of strict, gives assignments every week, takes surprise quizzes, does not interact properly with students and is very short tempered. His teaching skills are also not good. Rest of the faculties are okay. Now talking about the exams, there are mainly 2 exams, mid semester and end semester. Between them there are quizzes, assignments and practical exams. The difficulty of exam depends on the professor.
The campus life here is a mix of fun and academics. There is one cultural and technical festival which is called "Fluxus" generally held in the month of March every year. This is the best part of the college life in which we dance, have fun , participate in competitions, eat, play games and all those stuff. Also , there are many other small events like E-Summit which related to entrepreneurship, Model United Nations, Inter Branch Cultural Competitions, Various Competitions in Sports, Tedx, etc. They also help in refreshing our mind by keeping us stress free. Apart from these, we have many technical and cultural clubs like Astronomy , Robotics, Electronics, Google Developer Group, Programming Clubs and many more and Art , Music, Debate, Dance, etc respectively. They all are run by students like I am too the Head of Astronomy club. They really helps us enhance our creativity and keeps us engaged throughout the semester.
I really like the hostel facility here as it is advanced and clean. In 1st and 2nd year, you have to share room which some student(double occupancy) which is sometimes tough because the room is built for one people and you have to adjust with your roommate everytime. But from the third year, you get a single room which is very convinient. There are 2 washrooms for every 6 students which is good compared to some of the other IITs. Talking about the meal quality, it depends on caterer. There are 3 caterers in total , in which K-star (in my opinion) makes really good food. But sometimes they mess up , the taste is not up to the mark somtimes. They keep desserts every night , keeps special dinner once in a month(which is really delicious). My most favourite is breakfast , which is a whole kind of meal for me and it's healthy and delicious too. They give milk, eggs, fruits, salad , corn flakes, tea, coffee in addition. We take whatever and how much ever we want. Registration for hostel and mess is not separated , you register in it when you pay the fees per semester means it is included in semester fees(for 5 months collectively). So, my overall experience is satisfactory.
