If IIIT Bangalore MTech in CS/IT is that good, why it has so low GATE cutoff?
IIIT Bangalore does not offer any UF program and this translates to poor reputation. The majority of the student community and major recruiters are unaware of the college's existence. However, it offers a unique integrated course which is one of its kind graduate courses.
The uniqueness lies in the fact that the M.Tech course offered by IIIT Bangalore is majorly industry oriented in contrast to the research-focused curricula in other top institutions. This is also the reason why many major IT companies visit the college for campus placements and students get placed better than most of the IITs. If I have offer from both IIIT Bangalore and NIT Trichy for MTech CSE which will be a good option to choose?
If you have offers from all the mentioned institutes, then firstly I would like to congratulate you for achieving such a feat. Many students fail to get offers from any one of these institutes, and here you are sitting at the top of your game. Congratulations!
When it comes to choosing the best option among these three, I would suggest that you choose NIT Trichy. The reputation of NIT Trichy as one of the best NITs is by far one of the driving forces of students choosing this institution. The CSE department of NIT Trichy has a curriculum that has been developed to meet the industry needs of the students. You will get to learn multiple programming languages as well as be able to use them on multiple projects. You will be encouraged to develop new software. There are instances where students become entrepreneurs on the campus and pitch their projects and software to investors.
What should be my strategy for getting admission in IIT Bombay for an MTech in the CSE branch?
One of my friends made it into IISc with a rank of 10. I enquired about the strategy he adopted to score such high marks. He told me about his 3 milestone theories and the things he achieved on the way. The final outcome is 75 marks in GATE which will help you get CSE in IIT Bombay.
1st Milestone: The first and foremost goal you should set is to achieve 25 marks in GATE. This can be done by working on some basic mathematics, aptitude, and core subjects. This can be done from
the college itself. Try to secure 25 marks in the final year on the first attempt and once you are done move to the second milestone.
2nd milestone: You have to achieve another 25 marks to make it 50. I suggest not taking a gap to prepare for this. This can be done over the 2 years after your graduation during which you can take up an IT job and increase your work experience. This will be useful during placements at IIT Bombay.
To achieve this milestone, read some more core mathematics, and cover 3–4 core subjects previous 25 marks revision. If you are able to secure 50 marks over the next couple of attempts, you don’t have to worry much as you can get admission in any IIT.
3rd milestone: If you want those additional 25 marks take help from some professionals and seniors.
My friend got a 10 rank after working on this strategy and he is working at Microsoft today.
IIIT Bangalore iMtech in CSE or NIT Surathkal BTech in CSE, what should I choose?
NIT Surathkal B.Tech in CSE is definitely a better choice because it's one of the oldest institutes with a rich legacy. The department has lots of establishments in academics as well as industry. There are several well-established student activity bodies and an elaborate alumni base with a coding background.
I am strongly against you joining an integrated program at the bachelor's level because you first need to know the exact domain you are interested in. If you realize that you have taken the wrong branch then spending 5 years will become very difficult. BTech gives you enough time and opportunities to analyze what your interests are you can not decide, after 3-4 semesters, you will be able to judge yourself overall. Also, a B.Tech in CSE from NIT Karnataka with a good GRE score may help you get admission offers of MS abroad.
So go for NIT Surathkal BTech in CSE without any second thoughts.
What rank in GATE is required to get into IIIT Delhi for an MTech in CSE?
IIIT Delhi considers both your GATE rank and UG percentage for admissions into M.Tech. You can apply through two categories- GATE and Non GATE.
For shortlisting GATE candidates, GATE rank and UG percentage are considered. 2500 GATE rank and 75% UG score is enough to get shortlisted for M.Tech CSE. This is followed by an interview.
Non-GATE candidates are shortlisted based on their UG percentage. Around 75% is enough to be shortlisted for M.Tech CSE. Once shortlisted, you’ll have to give a written test followed by an interview. Non-GATE qualifiers don’t get a stipend during their M.Tech.
IIIT Delhi frequently changes its selection criteria. Earlier Codechef's long score was considered during selections, but not now. College toppers and ICPC participants have better selection chances than the others.
Which is a better option: IIIT Hyderabad (M.Tech CSE) or BITS Pilani (M.E Software Systems)? Why?
In my opinion, M.Tech in CSE from IIIT Hyderabad is way better than the M.E. Software System from BITS Pilani. Honestly, both the colleges are good so my comparison is only on the basis of the courses. Consider the following points of comparison
- ME in the Software System curriculum mostly comprises software engineering or IT subjects and has little connection with the actual CSE curriculum. Whereas, if you take CSE, you can opt for the subjects of your choice from the second year and can take subjects directly related to CSE.
- BITS Pilani has a better brand value and enjoys more global recognition than IIIT Hyderabad thereby making it easy to pursue Ph.D. from a foreign university.
- M.E. in Software Systems limits the scope of a Ph.D. with a good research area in CSE.
In the end, I will say both IIIT Hyderabad and BITS are excellent institutes for CSE education and offer equally good placements. So priority should be given to the course and not the college!

One of my friends had both options, MTech in IIT Delhi and MTech in IISc Bangalore, however, despite his hailing from Delhi, he chose IISc Bangalore over IIT Delhi. Some strong reasons which influenced his decision were
- The Institute has excellent research facilities and approaches second to no other engineering Institute in India.
- IISc Bangalore does not have a BTech program and thus the entire focus of the faculty resources, education, and resources are invested in the Master's program unlike IIT Delhi, where BTech is given more importance.
- IIT Delhi has a higher intake of UG students than PG students and they are given more preferences and attention than UG students.
- Being situated in Bangalore, the IT hub of India IISC has close ties with IT companies visiting frequently for some or other events or technical competitions
- Most GATE toppers prefer IISc or IIT Bombay over IIT Delhi and so do the companies offering placements.
- The overall ambiance of campus life is more tranquil in IISc Bangalore than in IIT Delhi which is an overly populated and polluted city.
- IISc is being recognized by foreign universities and one can pursue their Ph.D. with a degree from IISc.
All these pointers strongly inclined my friend towards IISc and he eventually completed his MTech from there.
