Which is better recognised in the U.S. for job vacancies, IIM Shillong or Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai?

RA
Rishikesh Arora Posted On : February 13th, 2024
Studied MBA from IIM Amedabad

Majority US companies hire Indians for engineering roles, that too for IT sector jobs which we are best known for.

US people are good at management. So they seek technical experts from India. This is why the top performers of IITs get readily placed in IT jobs in the US for attractive salaries (more than 7 figures in rupees).

Whether you join an IIM or Great Lakes Institute, both receive a limited number of US offers during placement season. As for off campus placements, IIM Shillong and Great Lakes are both average institutes. So the chances of getting a US based offer are further reduced.

The best option is to either opt for an MBA in the US itself, or to work for big names in India for a couple of years. This will help you build a strong resume, and get noticed by recruiters abroad.

I've gotten selected in both Great Lakes PGPM and TAPMI. Which one should I choose?

It majorly depends on whether you have received the offer letter for the PGDM 2 years course or PGPM 1-year. If you have 2 year course from both of the colleges then go for TAPMI. But if you have an offer letter for PGPM 1-year course then go for Great Lakes, Chennai.

I have an admit from Great Lakes, Chennai, but my PI results of IMT/IMI/IIMR/IIT's are yet to come. Shall I take up GL or wait for othr results?

The leading B-schools in India include IIM, IXB, XLRI, FMS, JBIMS, IIFT, MDI, IMT, NMIMS, and SIMBM. These are well-reputed institutions that were established 30 years ago. Recently, IIMs should not be under consideration as they lack good infrastructure and effective classes. That might turn a bright student into a dumb one through exposure to negative vibes.

When it comes to the Great Lakes Institute of Management, it is also poor in terms of academics and campus atmosphere. If you are strongly passionate about the field of software, as they are relatively better than others, then opt for Great Lakes.

So, it is better to wait for your upcoming results and choose any one of the aforementioned leading B schools in India.

Is it good to join PGPM FLEX program offered by Great Lakes Chennai for a person who is 2 year experienced in financial institution?

RS
Rahul Sinha Posted On : July 11th, 2023
Studied at Great Lakes Institute of Management (India)

The Great Lakes PGPM program claims to help you in switching jobs or functions by enhancing your knowledge base and managerial skills. But the truth is far from this. I know a friend who is an IT engineer with 8 years of work experience who completed the PGPM flex program to switch from the tech stream to the management stream but failed to do so. The result might be different for you though. So the subjectivity can best be clarified through the following pros and cons

Pros:-

  • PGPM Flex has a diverse curriculum comprising a wide range of subjects taught by professionals who are experts in their respective fields.
  • You will get a taste of the regular courses because of their similar pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Your peer pool will be a mixed bag from all over the country so the learning experience is unique.

Cons:-

  • The degree is invaluable in most organizations.
  • Does not affect your future prospects to a great extent.
  • The degree is not recognized by WES.

Overall, the degree adds little value to your profile though the effect may vary from person to person.
