What should I choose between IIT Mandi Civil and DTU CSE?
My sister too had to choose between IIT Mandi and another institute but chose IIT Mandi mainly because of its highly lenient branch change policy.
Placement-wise too, IIT Mandi gives an edge to DTU and NSIT. Here is a head-on comparison between the placement statistics of IIT Mandi and DTU.

While the highest CTC of DTU might seem higher, it’s the average package that actually determines the placement scenario of an institute. Considering that IIT Mandi is better than DTU. In fact, Electrical in IIT Mandi is even then DTU. Secondly, DTU’s increasing batch size is another major concern these days. I personally think DTU is overhyped because of its NCR location. Considering the fact that Delhiites get a quota of 80% you can infer how diluted the talent pool of DTU is.
Should I go for civil engineering or metallurgy and material science engineering in NIT Trichy?
I would suggest you go for metallurgy if you plan to do a job right after completing your degree. Metallurgy has more job opportunities to offer. With Metallurgy, you can easily learn coding and go for tech companies. NIT Trichy has a great coding culture, so picking up coding skills will not be difficult.
If you plan to prepare for civil services or any other government job, I would suggest you go for civil engineering.
When compared to metallurgy, there are fewer job opportunities in the civil department.
If you plan on doing an MBA after having done your engineering, you can opt for either of them because then it does not matter anyway.
Which is better, CSE at DTU or civil engineering at IIT Roorkee if my inclination is towards CSE?
If you are sure about your interest in CSE, DTU is the best option for you. However, if you are yet to identify your area of interest then go through the following parameters
- Placement: DTU has ties with huge CSE companies like Amazon, and Microsoft that offer excellent packages to the students even better than Civil at IIT Roorkee. I know many friends from NSITs and DTU that work in Microsoft today.
- Research: The CS department is undoubtedly better in terms of research work and opportunities than the Civil.
- IAS: For IAS, the most preferred branch is Civil. However, if you do for Roorkee, you will have limited options for coaching which can be easily sought at IIT Delhi
- MBA: Again, because of better coaching institutes, IIT Delhi is better to prepare for CAT.
Once you are sure of your inclination making a decision won’t seem so difficult!

Other South Indian NITs like Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal offer better industry exposure and have more promising scenarios. NIT Calicut lacks transport facilities so most construction companies prefer visiting the nearest NIT rather than traveling all the way to Calicut. Another reason for the poor placement scenario here is the low performance of the senior batches of the branch.
However, the situation is gradually improving as the institute has been adopting measures to support students pursuing internships at IITs and other industries.
How is civil engineering in IIEST, Shibpur in comparision to NIT, Raipur?
IIEST Shibpur is an excellent institute for courses in engineering, especially civil engineering. It is a well-established and well-known branch. There are several advantages of being in IIEST Shibpur and having a degree from the institute.
My brother has studied there and the points below are his experience at the institute:
- There are excellent faculties in the Civil engineering department, except a couple of faculties who are not that great as evident from student reviews.
- There are innumerous projects and researches going on in the Civil engineering department at IIEST. The teachers and lecturers are excellent in their guidance for students interested in project works and show a lot of enthusiasm in the same.
- Above all, IIEST has gained central status a few years back, which ensures the development in research and teaching methodologies even further with time.
Therefore, Civil engineering at IIEST is definitely a great choice for students, maybe even better than NIT Raipur in certain areas.
