Which is better, IIT Delhi (chemical) or BITS Pilani (CSE)?

S
Shruti Posted On : July 9th, 2024
student at IIT Delhi

I am a B.Tech Chemical Engineering student at IIT Delhi. According to me, these are the main factors you should consider while making up your mind:

  • Demand: CSE is more in-demand than chemical engineering.
  • Brand: The “IIT” tag holds more brand value than the “BITS” tag. The “IIT” tag will be more advantageous if you want to apply to foreign universities for higher education later on.
  • Fees: IIT Delhi is an affordable choice, whereas, BITS Pilani has high fees for its engineering programs. Additionally, IIT Delhi has better placements, which places it at a better position in terms of ROI.

Here is a comparison between IIT Delhi Chemical and BITS Pilani CSE:

Parameters

IIT Delhi Chemical

BITS Pilani CSE

Course Fee

INR 99,650 (for sem-1)*

INR 3.32 lakh (for sem-1)

Highest Package (2023: Overall)

INR 2.5 CPA

INR 60. 75 LPA

Average Package (2023: Overall)

INR 17.60 LPA

INR 30.37 LPA

CTC Range (for 2023)

-

(IT branches) INR 11 - 38 LPA

Campus Recruiters

Microsoft, CISCO, Accenture, Brain & company, Jaguar Land Rover India Limited

EY, HSBC,KPMC, HCL,IBM, TCS

*This is the fee-structure for General/OBC students with family income>5 LPA.

Even though CSE is a highly sought after branch in the current market, I would suggest you opt for Chemical Engineering at IIT Delhi. IIT Delhi will offer a better ROI, and its brand name will be of immense benefit if you wish to pursue higher studies in India and abroad after graduation.

You can do some research on the career and research opportunities after Chemical Engineering, and see if this branch aligns with your future goals.

My rank in the JEE mains is 50000. Should I go for the chemical branch in NIT Raipur?

AM
Aditya Mishra Posted On : September 9th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Raipur

Yes, you can go for the Chemical branch at NIT Raipur unless you get selected for a better NIT till the last round. Even if you aren’t interested in Chemical Engineering, you need not worry as NIT Raipur has a branch change policy that lets you upgrade your branch to a better one after one year. You need a good CGPA and enough vacant Seeta in the desired branch to make this possible. Many of my friends at NIT Raipur have upgraded their branches from chemical to IT, Electrical, and Civil.

Usually, the students of this branch are hired by mass recruiters. These companies offer jobs in various fields in case you don’t want to continue working in the Chemical field. Last year, the Chemical Engineering branch received 54 offers and the total number of students eligible for placements was 55.

In all, NIT Raipur is a decent choice given its high-paced development rate.

How is Chemical Engineering at MANIT Bhopal?

PS
Parveen Sindhu Posted On : April 22nd, 2023
Studied at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

If you are considering the Chemical Engineering Department at MANIT Bhopal, here are some pros and cons based on the experience of a current student:

Pros:

  • The department has relatively small class sizes of around 60 students. This allows for more one-on-one interaction with professors, similar to what you may have experienced in school.
  • The HOD (Head of Department) and senior faculty members are helpful and care about the interests of students.
  • Despite being a newer department (started around 10 years ago), the Chemical Engineering Department has maintained decent placement records.
  • Compared to other departments, there are fewer classes, giving you more time for yourself to prepare for future prospects such as GATE, CAT, GRE, etc.
  • The department has better infrastructure than many other departments at MANIT, and the labs have continuously improved over the past few years.

Cons:

  • There are no professors in the Chemical Engineering Department, only Assistant Professors. This can lower the standard of education, which may not be what one would expect from an NIT.
  • Most of the courses are taught by Contract Faculties who can be rude, non-qualified, and excessively egoistic.
  • The department has a skewed relative grading system where no one gets a perfect 10 in any subject, even if they score as high as 97/98. This diminishes the point of having a relative grading system.
  • There is no library in the department, and even the college library is in a state of extreme disarray.

Overall, if you are considering the Chemical Engineering Department at MANIT, it is important to weigh the pros and cons mentioned above. While the department has small class sizes, helpful senior faculty members, and decent placements, it also has a lack of professors, rude contract faculties, a skewed grading system, and a lack of library resources.

AG
Aditi Ghose Posted On : July 20th, 2023
studied at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India

In order to determine the right branch for yourself, you will have to go through a list of questions related to these branches individually.

Production Engineering:

  • Are you okay with drilling a hole, shaping a metal part with a lathe, or polishing a metal piece for microscopic inspection
  • Can you handle distorted schedules?
  • Do you have an interest in drawing and designing?

If yes, then go for Production Engineering.

Instrumentation and control engineering:

  • Can you withstand extreme peer pressure, and strict professors.
  • Can you give multiple internals before semester exams
  • Can you handle extremely long lab sessions?

If yes, then go for Instrumentation and Control Engineering.

Chemical engineering:

  • Can you attend multiple and frequently held lab sessions.
  • Do you have any interest in thermodynamics?

If yes then go for Chemical Engineering.

What is it like to do chemical science and technology at IIT-Guwahati?

RD
Rithi Dasgupta Posted On : May 4th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (IIITG)

Chemical Science and Technology is a great choice for those who have a genuine interest in the subject of Chemistry.

  • It comprises inorganic, organic, and other aspects.
  • It covers aspects of drug design, medicinal chemistry, material science, environmental science, and even molecular biology.
  • It is a research-oriented discipline
  • It's a contemporary of Engineering Physics
  • Its syllabus covers topics like nano-chemistry and nano-technology which is the next big thing in the engineering sector

Prospects

  • The prospects of CST are not at or with that of Chemical Engineering unless you are going to opt for non-core jobs.

Chemical Engineering, on the other hand, is a blend of a profusion of physical chemistry along with a mess of physics, math, and many other things. It entails the processes that help maximize efficiency, increase profit, and focus on the best possible way for the production of any product in any industry.

Prospects

  • The prospects of Chemical Engineering are better than CST and its students receive better packages.

Ultimately, it’s all about if you are going for core or non-core jobs. Either way, Chemical Engineering is a better option than CST unless you have a serious inclination toward Chemistry.

What should I choose, VJTI for Computer Science or BITS Goa for Chemical?

RS
Rohan Sewaney Posted On : May 13th, 2024
VJTI pass out

My friend also faced the dilemma of choosing between VJTI and BITS Goa. He ended up choosing VJTI because of the following reasons.

  • VJTI offers a renowned CS curriculum with a strong focus on practical learning.
  • BITS Goa may have a higher average salary during placement, but placements for CS at VJTI are also pretty solid. A total of 401 BTech students have been placed till now in 2024. The highest package was secured by a BTech Computer Science student which stood at INR 57 LPA with the average package being INR 20 LPA.
  • VJTI has strong industry connections and easily offers students research and internship opportunities in top firms.
  • BITS Goa also offer most of such programs in dual degree format which may be uncomfortable for some students.
  • Mumbai being a tech hub can also be beneficial as VJTI CS students are to an ecosystem of networking opportunities and jobs.

How do I choose between IIT Delhi engineering physics, civil, production & industrial, and chemical engineering?

PS
Pawan Sinha Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2020)

I will restrict my answer to Engineering Physics and Chemicals only as I know the same only.

  • The major criterion followed at IIT Delhi by all the branches is a well-maintained CG. To secure good placements one has to constantly score a good CG throughout the program.
  • During your admission, the department does not play any role but your 85 percent constraint on minimum possible strength does.
  • Engineering Physics is a unique branch for those highly passionate about Physics and want to pursue higher studies in the same
  • To secure core jobs, one has to move to MTech in Engineering Physics from BTech in Engineering Physics.
  • For Chemical Engineering students, BTech is more than enough to secure decent packages and great research opportunities outside India.
  • Consultancy and Analytics jobs are offered equally to students of all the departments
  • Engineering Physics graduates usually take up consultancy or IT jobs
  • Chemical Engineering is the most laid-back department of IIT Delhi with very flexible academics thus making it easy to maintain a decent CG throughout.

I wouldn’t suggest anyone go for Engineering Physics if they have no intention of pursuing it later. Instead, look for other options in BTech and explore your interests.

How is Chemical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar in terms of course, faculty, packages and placements?

AS
Anisha Srivastav Posted On : July 17th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

Chemical Engineering has a broad scope outside India but is yet to make its mark here. The field is not developed here yet, the demand is low and so is the pay. If you are genuinely interested in this field and want to pursue a career in the same, universities in the USA and Germany provide excellent opportunities. To ensure the maximum utilization of the benefits of this field, we need qualified professionals.

Infrastructure: IIT Gandhinagar is well known for its infrastructure and facilities. The new hostel has excellent accommodation facilities with 90 Mbps speed wifi. The food served in the mess is decent and there are also 4 canteens that have got a 5-star rating from FSSAI. Students are provided with 24/7 medical facilities.

Faculty: Sparing a few assistant professors, the faculty is mostly dedicated, passionate, and very learned. They provided constant assistance to the students.

Course: All the courses have the same syllabus in the first year. The semester exams are no joke and can be quite challenging at times. You will get some free time post classes so prepare well and get a good CPI. The institute follows a relative grading system so the passing marks vary from teacher to teacher.

Placements: Out of 27 registered students this year, 16 got placed bringing the placement percentage to 52.26%. IIT Gandhinagar's average package of Chemical Engineering stood at INR 14.82 LPA while the median package stood at INR 14 LPA.

Overall, the chemical Engineering department of IIT Gandhinagar is very promising although the placements are still average and need to improve.
