Can I avail any scholarship in IIEST Shibpur in the 2nd year based on the first-year results?
Yes, students can avail themselves of the scholarships. The college provides some amount to the toppers of each branch based on their ranks(CGPA) under the scholarship from GAABESU(Global Alumni Association of Bengal Engineering and Science University) office. Merit-Based Scholarship is given to departmental toppers for subsequent years too.
Not only for the toppers, but scholarships based on the financial status is also provided by the college to help such student. Also, Book-grants are available which helps you get books for every semester. You can avail of these scholarships from the GAABESU office on the campus.
If you are needy or meritorious, you will get a scholarship. So work hard and try to get good marks.

The Mechanical department is one of the oldest departments at IIEST Shibpur. Great offers are received by the department.

Here IIEST Shibpur will be a better choice for civil engineering as it is one of the oldest civil engineering colleges in our country and has improved a lot since its inception.
Batch Size:
One of my friends goes to IIEST, according to him the Civil Department has more than 100 students in a single batch.
Faculty:
The faculty of the civil engineering department is experienced, knowledgeable, and are highly qualified. They are great at teaching the concepts and are nice and friendly too. However, faculties sometimes tend to use Bangali while teaching, which is difficult to follow for out-of-state students.
Campus Life:
The campus is also very beautiful and the lifestyle at college is very lively. The hostel also provides many services and a student can decide the menu for their lunch and dinner.

Is electronics and telecommunication from IIEST Shibpur good?
The Electronic and Telecommunication (ETC) department of IIEST, Shibpur is held in high regard in India. Having my friend study there, I got to know the good and bad of the ETC department at IIEST Shibpur. These are some of the things I got to know from her -
- The faculty of the Electronic and Telecommunication (ETC) department is occupied entirely by the highly qualified professors who hold Doctorates from supremely reputed universities.
- Besides students being under great educational expertise, the placement rates of this department is seen to cross 90%, which certainly appears to be pretty commendable in terms of industrial independence.
- IIEST is widely known to be a Pioneer in Engineering education for the last few decades and has been the first to establish an IIT in India at Kharagpur.
- Besides being one of the best institutes for engineering, IIEST has gifted many World Leaders in Electronics, such as Dr. Bimal Kr. Bose who also is "World Leader in Power Electronics" in the USA.
- IIEST Shibpur has gifted Four Directors of the oldest leading IITs, Director of SPA /DTU / VCs of JU / SRMU/ WBUT among others. NIT Durgapur
- Companies like Amazon, axis bank, L&T Ecc, TATA, IBM, and so on visits campus every year for placements.
- The average salary package is of about 10 lakhs in the field of electrical engineering.The highest package was offered by Qualcomm is 24 lakhs.
Both the Institute are good choices for doing ECE/EE with excellent facilities likehuge libraries, good laboratories, classrooms, Wi-Fi hotspots.In NIT Durgapur, the E-study facility is also there. The faculty of both the Institute is equally good with highly qualified teachers. Top recruiters visit the campus every year for placements.
Which is better: IIIT Pune (CS) or IIEST Shibpur (mechanical)?
IIEST Shibpur offers a rich legacy and technical expertise, which makes it way superior as an institute when compared with IIIT Pune. But you need to decide whether you are interested in Mechanical or CS. Placement-wise too, IIEST Shibpur Mechanical is at par with other good engineering colleges in India.
As for placements, IIEST Mechanical is a better choice. But if you are planning for a post graduation after B.Tech, CS is a better branch for you. You must secure a rank of 250 or less, and get into top IITs for your M.Tech CS. Doing so will be beneficial for your career, and you can expect job offers from top brands like Google and Directi after your M.Tech.
On the other hand, an M.Tech in core branches like Mechanical won’t be as beneficial for your career. IIEST will offer you top notch faculties, and make your journey toward an MS/Phd. much easier, if you are planning for these degrees.
Based on what your future goals are, you can choose either of these two colleges/branches. But as a fact, core CS jobs are much better paying than core Mechanical ones.
Does IIEST Shibpur provide single occupancy hostel rooms for a BTech first year student?
No, first-year B.Tech students do not get a single occupancy hostel room. In fact, no government-funded Institute of National Importance will provide you a single occupancy room or AC room at least in the first year.
- The institute has 4 hostels, 3 boys and 1 girl, for first-year students where no senior is allowed to enter.
- All rooms in the boys hostels have to be shared by 4 students while in the girls’ hostel there are two types of rooms; one with 3 students and the other with 4 students sharing.
- The rooms are allotted on a random basis with an emphasis on giving students from the same department to share the rooms.
The rooms are very clean and if you keep them that way, then you won’t have any problem. The rooms are spacious enough as well. In the first and second year sharing rooms will eventually make your group studies more fun. In the third and fourth year, only you will get single occupancy rooms.
