How shall we prepare for essay writing and GK for XAT to get into XLRI? As this pattern was absent in CAT, how shall we cover these sessions in this short span?

AS
Abhijeet Sinha Posted On : September 6th, 2022
MBA NMIMS,Mumbai

There are no fixed strategy to tackle the essay section of XAT. The essay topics are usually unpredictable. Usually, the topics are abstract in nature. It’s often observed that the topics are based on a common idiom or phrase with an implied philosophical hint. The aim of this section is to judge your language skill as well as your thought process. Practice writing sample essays on various topics and assess them on content and writing style. Reading the editorial section of national newspapers can be helpful for this section.

For the GK section, you should focus more on Economics and Business related topics. Prepare current affairs for the last 6 months. For Static GK read about awards, geography, books & authors, cabinet ministers, and government yojanas.

How should I prepare for the FTII entrance exam of acting?

DD
Disha Das Posted On : January 14th, 2021
Screenplay Writer from Film and Television Institute of India (2019)

You should be familiar with the overall exam pattern. One of the essential criteria is to make section-wise preparation to earn a good score. FTII question paper consists of two sections: section 1, and section 2.

In the following, an overview of the exam pattern of the FTII entrance exam is given:

Section 1:

  • Exam Type: MCQ
  • Syllabus Covered:
    • General Awareness (both international and national)
    • Mental Ability (Mathematical Reasoning)
    • Indian History, arts, culture, music, architecture, folk-art, television and cinema

Section 2:

  • Exam Type: Subjective
    • For Example: (General Description)
      • Name one character and elaborate on the performance from the movies you have seen recently.
      • What is your personal idea for the costume design? Is it worth the recognition?
      • How do you prepare for a role after studying the script? Will you face any difficulties?
      • Do you think that acting is the most challenging profession? Why/why not.
  • Syllabus Covered:
    • This section is designed to test the candidate’s ability towards the specific cinematic expressions.

In the following, the mark division for each question from both of these sections is given.

Section 1

Section 2

15+15+20=50

(General Awareness: 15 marks

Mental Ability: 15 marks

Indian History, arts, culture, music, architecture, folk-art, television and cinema: 15 marks)

5*10= 50 (In this section total 8 questions are given, in which the students have to answer 5, each with 10 marks)

The following important books for FTII are recommended:

  • A Journey Through 100 Years of Indian Cinema: A Cinema Quiz Book.
  • History of Indian Cinema.
  • Deep Focus: Reflection on Indian Cinema.
  • Speaking of Films by Satyajit Ray.
  • Get Trained and Be A Star: Update Your Acting and Direction Skills.

Thus, how to prepare for any course of FTII cannot be said, as there is no fixed syllabus for the subjective test of this entrance. FTII entrances also do not have any negative marking; thereby, the students need to prepare from the different facets of a film and the film making policies.

  • For example: In the entrance test for acting, the admission team mainly evaluates the student's passion towards acting, and sometimes they wish to see some of the acting skills also at the time of interview.

Thus, it can be stated that besides the theoretical study, you should prepare some tricks of acting to impress the interviewer at the time of interview. For this reason, you must learn a few acting tricks from the online video, along with dialogues and stage presentation.

What is the preparation strategy for the XAT? How much do I need to score in the XAT to get admitted to XLRI?

PD
Priyanka Deshmukh Posted On : May 30th, 2021
PGDBM Marketing & Operations Management, Xavier School of Management (2016)

The preparation strategy of CAT and XAT are more or less similar but have some differences too. Since my friend has already prepared for CAT, the points below are important for the preparation of XAT.

  • One of the major reasons for you to score well in CAT but unable to succeed in XAT is decision making. For this purpose, you need to get soft copies of GMAT papers (official) and prepare the critical reasoning.
  • The grammar questions of XAT are more difficult than those of CAT.
  • In Quantitative aptitude, the major concern is the selection of questions. Unlike CAT, the cut-offs of XAT are also low. So, you must judge which question to attempt and which one to leave, because accuracy is important.
  • Attempting several mock tests and solving the previous year's papers would help a lot. An overall percentage of about 40% would fetch a 98 percentile in XAT.
  • Having classified general knowledge is beneficial.
  • For the essay part, you need to practice thinking, at least two to three points instantly, as there is a shortage in time. But, as it is not considered in the percentile, it can be taken a little lightly.

These are some of the most important preparation tips for XAT. For XLRI, the cut-off percentile for HR is about 93 and that of BM is around 96. You should aim for a 98+ percentile score, which has a good enough weightage. A greater percentile always has more chances for the call to get converted.
