With a GATE 2025 score of 42.33 marks in Computer Science, your son has comfortably crossed the General category qualifying cut-off mark of 29.2 marks and can be eligible for admission into a number of top institutes in India. Here is a quick analysis of where he stands and the options that actually confront him:
| Institute Type | Chance for Admission in CSE |
|---|---|
| Top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, etc.) | Unlikely, as cutoffs are usually 55–65+ marks |
| Newer IITs (Jodhpur, Patna, Dhanbad, etc.) | Possible in later rounds or for allied CSE branches |
| Top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) | Competitive, but admission more likely in later rounds or for specializations like information security and data science. |
| Mid/Lower NITs | Good chance for direct admission in CSE |
| Top IIITs (Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur) | Competitive; possible depending on the round and specialization |
| Other IIITs | Good chances for CSE or related programs |
Recommendations: Apply through COAP (for IITs) and CCMT (for NITs/IIITs). Keep looking for related fields like Data Science, Cybersecurity, or Information Technology, which may have slightly lower cutoffs. And take all rounds of counseling, including spot rounds, as cutoff trends fluctuate every year. Also visit state universities and centrally funded colleges that accept GATE scores.
Your son is rightly positioned for M.Tech admissions in all NITs, IIITs, and new IITs. CSE and this score will not make the top 5 IITs feasible, but there are plenty of good colleges where he can build a strong academic and professional life. Wishing your son best of luck for future admissions.
The M.Tech CSE placement statistics for 2023 were quite good.
Being an MTech student in CSE at IIT Kanpur, I would say my experience has been great.
I am a fourth year M.Tech CSE student at IIT Madras. Here are the M.Tech CSE placement details for 2023 at IIT Madras-
Here are some names from a long list of recruiters that visited the IITM campus for placements- Accenture, Aditya Birla Science and Technology Company Private Limited, Amadeus Software Labs, Amazon, American Express, Apollo 247, Apple, etc.
It is evident from the impressive figures that IIT Madras offers top notch placements in M.Tech CSE.
I completed my M.Tech CSE from IIT Mandi in 2021. The cutoff for M.Tech Computer Science and Engineering admissions at IIT Mandi for 2022 was 3017 (for general category). This cutoff is determined based on various factors including the number of applicants, their qualifications, and the availability of seats.
Here is the detailed GATE cutoff 2022 for M.Tech CSE admissions at IIT Mandi-
IIT Mandi M.Tech CSE cutoff for 2022:
| Category | Cutoff Rank 2022 |
|---|---|
| General | 3017 |
| EWS | 462 |
| OBC | 1212 |
| SC | 636 |
| ST | 310 |
From the 2022 cutoff, you will get an idea of the minimum rank required for admission into IIT Mandi’s M.Tech CSE programme. The 2023 and 2024 cutoff for M.Tech CSE admissions at IIT Mandi are not available as yet.
Congrats on getting an IIT for your M.Tech CSE.
As for IIT Tirupati, even though it started its M.Tech intake only a few years ago, it offers decent placements for M.Tech CSE. During 2022, the M.Tech CSE branch of IIT Tirupati recorded an average package of 16 LPA. Moreover, all 8 registered students were successfully placed from the campus. IIT Tirupati carries the prestigious ‘IIT tag’ which will be beneficial for your placement. But most importantly, your skillset will get you placed.
If your rank is not that good and you aren’t sure about IIT Tirupati, you can try for IIT Dhanbad, BHU or Guwahati in the spot rounds. You can even try for admission into a good NIT.
IITs offer better placements for MTech in Computer Science. ISI Kolkata offers fewer core Computer Science job profiles. Most opportunities offered at the institute are for M.Stat and MSQE students. But if you want a career as a Data Scientist, it will be a better choice. ISI Kolkata placements are the best in the country for analytics. However, the recruiting companies usually prefer M.Stat/MSQE students over M.Tech.
According to the recent placement highlights M.Tech CS students of ISI usually receive a median CTC of around INR 18.6 LPA.
In terms of research too, join ISI Kolkata, if you want to work on something related to analytics or big data, etc. If you want a traditional career path in CS, then IITs will be better.
