How good is doing a PhD in BITS Pilani compared to IITs?
The mentors and research facilities at IITs are much better than at BITS Pilani. However, the passing process is as much more difficult at IITs.
BITS Pilani, on the other hand, is flexible to incorporate the changing scenario and a PhD from BITS Pilani is much more industry relevant.
One of my cousins had a bad experience at BITS Pilani during his Ph.D. in the Mechanical branch. According to him, a large number of Ph.D. students in BITS Pilani drop out because of the intense pressure for producing results. PhD students are burdened with numerous tasks including the evaluation work for B.Tech. The saving grace for Ph.D. at BITS is that under a guide, your Ph.D. will be completed in 3 years like an MS from IIT.
Considering my cousin’s experience, you should consult the alumni at BITS Pilani before choosing the institution for pursuing your Ph.D. Otherwise, BITS Pilani is a reputable institution and its Ph.D. degree will hold great relevance. More so, if you get the right mentors and the right facilities, the name tag of an institution becomes secondary.
How is the M.Tech electrical placement at BITS Pilani?
BITS Pilani offers decent placement support to students from the M.Tech. and B.Tech. batches. The chances are higher for the one who has a master’s in Mechanical Engineering. BITS Pilani conducts the placement process in two semesters. During the first semester, about 15-20 companies, including Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, SanDisk, Nvidia, Cisco, and so on, visit the campus. In the second semester, the placement is done based on your CGPA, as the companies mostly prefer students who score a CGPA above 8.

How do I improve my accuracy for BITS Pilani?
The BITS examination’s major focus is your speed and basics. In the exam, you have to answer 150 questions in 180 minutes. It is better not to answer the extra questions, which may lead to a decrease in your points. Make sure you have covered the NCERT text and understand the basics thoroughly. What is taught in the first semester in BITS Pilani? What textbooks are used?
The first-year syllabus of every engineering college generally consists of basic science subjects, along with some subjects common to all departments of engineering. Here are the subjects taught in BITS Pilani during the first and second semesters of engineering.
First Semester:
- MEOW stands for Mechanics Oscillations and Waves. The “waves” part of the subject is easier and scoring. If you like Mechanics, you will find it easy.
- General Chemistry is also taught during the first semester. The quantum chemistry part is a bit difficult to understand, so most students just learn to solve problems in this.
- General Biology consists of interesting lectures. The exams of this subject consist of conceptual questions and so, you should have your concepts cleared.
- M1 is the first paper for mathematics, having series, sequences, and some parts of advanced calculus in it.
- Engineering Graphics is a subject in which you will be taught the usage of AutoCAD. It is better for you to get used to AutoCAD 2014 before joining college because some find this difficult due to poor visualization skills.
- The Labs in physics and biology are usually normal. You just need to be regular, work properly in labs, and be prepared for viva to get a decent grade in those lab papers.
Second Semester:
- M2 is the second paper for engineering mathematics, having chapters in linear algebra and complex numbers. The part of linear algebra is very scoring.
- The most important course in the second semester is computer programming, which has 4 units of credit.
- Probability and Statistics is a very easy course, even easier in the midterm component. Attend all lectures till post the midterm. In those, new concepts are taught.
- Thermodynamics is an interesting subject. You need to learn the use of tables, which is utterly important.
- Electrical Science is a vast course. Usually, most students have a low average in this subject and so, try to do well in the tutorial tests.
- Technical Report Writing is a small course. You will need to learn the format used in writing and write in brief.
- The workshop is considered a mechanical laboratory. You need to choose between sections wisely as per interest and do well in the 3-unit shops.

You seemed to have performed quite well considering your JEE rank and BITSAT score. While most board toppers fail to do well in competitive exams, you managed to excellently score well in all competitive exams. You seem to have great opportunities ahead if you join BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus, and CSE. considering your ranks and your being a board topper, you can easily maintain an 8 +. The only major drawback is the high fees for which you can seek assistance from the institute regarding scholarships.

Should I prefer IIT Kanpur for electrical or BITS Pilani for a CS?
Both IIT Kanpur Electrical and BITS Pilani CS are excellent choices yet, if I had to choose one, I would have opted for BITS Pilani CS. Here’s why,
- It’s not a brainer that a CS branch will fetch you more opportunities in terms of packages and exposure. It has become one of the most demanded branches and has numerous opportunities for everyone. The workload is also less sparing you more time to explore your area of interest.
- BITS has been given the IoE status making its tag superior in terms of a brand name to IIT Kanpur.
- There are no compulsory attendance rules making it easy for students to leave classes that they find irrelevant and do something productive during that time.
- The accommodation facilities at BITS Pilani are better than IIT Kanpur and students get to have their own room starting from the second year itself. You don’t have to wait for the final year like IITs to get a single room.
- IIT Kanpur's fees are around 8-9 Lakhs whereas that of BITS Pilani are around 19-20 Lakhs. This might be a problem for the financially weak strata. However, BITS Pilani offers many scholarships and you also get a high-paying job much more easily.
