Thapar University(Patiala): What should I do if I am not liking my college life?
If you are not liking your college life currently, there are a few options you can explore. These could include any of the following:
- Look out for research options. See what your faculty is working on. This may get you interested in something.
- Summer internships are also quite popular at universities abroad. Choose a subject you like and do a semester abroad if you are interested in that.

- Get in touch with your seniors and super seniors and see what they did during their time as a student. Maybe that should help.

Is electrical engineering worth joining in Thapar University?
Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, established in 1956 is ranked 29th by NIRF, amongst the top engineering colleges in India. The electrical engineering course at Thapar aims at research-intensive training and has numerous live research projects and prototypes development projects funded by the government and industry giants like IBM and Intel. Few of the fields where students get to work are:
- Smart grids and renewable energy
- Electric vehicles
- Biomedical instrumentation
- Optical networks
- Embedded systems

The fees for the electrical engineering course is 13.22 lakhs. The total student intake in this course is 120.
Course Structure:
The course curriculum for EE is focused on building strong concepts giving in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of Power Systems, Energy Studies, Power Electronics, Signal Processing, and other related fields. The institute engages students in various activities all-round the year, involving research projects, site visits, boot camps, etc.

Placement statistics of electrical engineering for the year 2019 show the top recruiters are Microsoft, Deloitte, Infosys, Samsung, Reliance, and the average CTC was around 7.4 LPA.

Should I apply for Thapar University and can I get loan of total fees of Thapar, can I repay that loan easily, and finally is it worth it?
Yes, it's quite possible to secure a loan for the total fees of Thapar University. Banks offer a variety of educational loans such as
- Upto 4 Lac-Without Any Guarantor
- 4–7 Lac- With a Guarantor( Parents)
- Above 7 Lac- With Proper Collateral
However, banks offer privileges like low-interest rates and Loan Without Collateral only to students of top institutions and sadly Thapar University is not yet among them. One of my friends at Thapar University got a loan from the Indian Bank. Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology is in their List-A, institutions and so he received 100% finance without Collateral up to Rs. 30 Lac.
As for the repayment of the loan, it directly depends on the type of package you land up with. Generally, the placemats here are great and with enough hard work, you will be able to get a good job and thus will be able to repay the loan soon.
I am considering getting a civil engineering degree in Thapar University and a computer science degree in Galgotias University. So which one should I prefer? And how are these colleges?
Thapar University is better than Galgotias University for studying. Here in the following table, you will get basic information about both universities:

- Thapar University has a legacy of over 60 years. It has a highly successful alumni base. The faculty base for Civil Engineering at Thapar is one of the best. A lot of companies come for campus placement at Thapar.
If you are genuinely interested in CS then go for Galgotias. However, if you make a comparison between Galgotias University and Thapar University, then the latter is a better option than the former in terms of quality of education, environment, and placement.
How are the placement and job prospects of an M.Tech in ECE from Thapar University?
My sister did her M.E. in ECE from Thapar University in 2016. The placement and job prospects of Thapar University M.E. students depend on various factors. The most important of these is CGPA and dissertation. My sister’s dissertation revolved around music signal processing. If you get an 8 CGPA or above at the end of your 3rd semester, you will be eligible to sit for most of the placement interviews.
Your supervisor plays a great role in determining how well you write your dissertation. Choose your supervisor very wisely because your knowledge will ultimately weigh more than your credits. Choose an approachable and helpful supervisor. Having a good knowledge of your research area will allow you to perform well during the placement interviews and you will ultimately land a well paying job.
Core companies like Samsung, Freescale, Sandisk, among others allow both B.E. and M.E. students from Thapar University to sit for their placements. LPU, Sharda University, etc. have started visiting the campus with teaching job offers. You can also get placed for teaching in coaching centers like Akash during the placements. IT companies like Infosys also hire candidates from other branches like ECE. For other companies, they would explicitly state if they are not open for M.E. students.
Thus, the placement and job prospects for M.E. (ECE) students of Thapar University are quite good.
How do I apply for Thapar University?
You can find the link for the application on the university’s website. It is usually made available around March and you can locate it on the admissions tab.
If you are planning to apply, ensure that you have your 12th mark sheet ready, along with your personal details. If you do not have your JEE Scores yet, you can upload those later on.
There is also an application fee that needs to be paid while submitting the application form. Once you have filled the form entirely, keep a printout of it with you for further reference.

Which is better, Thapar University or IGDTUW?
Majority of students choose an MBA to get a good job. SMS, CUSAT satisfies your job requirements quite well. If you are hardworking and serious towards getting an offer, as a student of this institution and this department, your goal will be fulfilled. The highest package at SMS, CUSAT goes to around INR 20.14 LPA while the average package touches around 9.34 LPA. Some students of SMS, CUSAT got offers from Amazon for a salary of 14 LPA some time back. I would recommend you to not only focus on salary but also seek a job which is enjoyable, and offers you growth and learning opportunities.
What board percentage is required to get CSE at Thapar University through Mode-2 counselling?
One of my friends graduated from Thapar University and here’s what I got to know from him. Firstly let me answer your question.
- At Thapar University, you need only your PCM marks of 12th boards to get admission through mode-2 if you have a good percentage in the board examinations.
- However, less than 93% in PCM is difficult for you.
- You should have at least 92 to 93% in PCM (12th boards) to apply for the same.
- Since CSE is the most preferred branch at Thapar University the cutoffs are high.
- I would suggest you attend all rounds then only you will get an idea of where you stand in the list.
You may get CSE through mode-2 counseling however the chances are moderate. So, try all the modes and in-person counseling.
Which is better: CSE IN NIT JALANDHAR OR CSE IN THAPAR UNIVERSITY?
Unlike the general opinion that NIT Jalandhar is better than Thapar University just because of its NIT title, I have a different opinion. I think Thapar University should get the recognition it deserves. Some points in favor of my opinion are:

The CSE was renewed by Trinity College, Dublin. The curriculum is way more advanced than that of NIT Jalandhar. The latter has an outdated syllabus which is not relevant to the industry.

The research culture at Thapar University is better than that of NIT Jalandhar where no one is interested in writing research papers at all.

There are various coaching institutes in and around Thapar University for GRE/CAT/IAS/GMAT.
All these points clearly prove that Thapar University is better than NIT Jalandhar.
Why are the placements in Thapar University so high despite the bad reviews of many students studying at Thapar?
Thapar University has better placements than most private colleges and NITs. But the problem is, placements here directly depend on the grades of the students, and only the serious ones who work hard to build their profile bag the best packages.
Now the reviews of students are mixed because not everyone invests the same efforts and bags high packages. The people giving bad reviews are the ones who did not build their resumes well.
The best thing about Thapar University is the level of freedom you get to experience here. However, the increasing intake is slowly deteriorating the student quality so you might want to consider this before joining.
