I want to change my branch from mechanical to CS within the same college and university (RGPV). What should I do?
Firstly contact your college’s Administration department. The college usually conducts counselling for change of branch right after first year examinations. This is decided on the basis of your marks in the first year.

All of the options you've mentioned are reputable institutions with strong programs in their respective fields. However, the best choice for you will depend on your individual interests, goals, and priorities.
- The branches CSE, Electronics, and MNC(Math and Computing) offer better job opportunities with higher packages in comparison to other branches. Thus if you are in desperate need of a job, these branches will serve you best.
- Mechanical Engineering is a branch best suited for those targeting a government job. This branch too has decent job opportunities considering the fact that India sets up more manufacturing sectors under Make in India initiative.
- Engineering Physics is a core branch that has little to offer in terms of exposure and opportunities. I won’t suggest you go for this unless you are extremely passionate about Physics. You can take it if you are planning a branch change if you want to clear UPSC CSE.
Lastly, my suggestion would be to target top NITs instead and not go for a mediocre branch. Additionally, you may want to reach out to current students or alumni of each institution to get a sense of their experiences.
Is NIT Puducherry for ECE better than IIITDM Kancheepuram for mechanical?
IIITDM Kancheepuram Mechanical is better in comparison. The department has four branches under the norms of Design and Manufacturing. The academics are practical-oriented. IIITDM follows an updated curriculum that is different from the traditional course structure of most engineering colleges. The Mechanical faculties are great. Most of them have PhDs qualifications from reputed IITs and NITs.
IIITDM Kancheepuram placements are good for Mechanical. Students of the branch get recruited as Project leads, Supervisors, Design Operators, etc. The average CTC for the branch is around INR 7 LPA.
Is it good for girls to take up mechanical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar?
There has always been a stereotype that Mechanical Engineering is better suited for male than female students. Girls are pushed to take other courses like Electronics or Computer Science because they are said not to possess the physical strength required for the fieldwork in Mechanical Engineering. Even in top engineering colleges, it is seen that the male to female gender ratio is 140:10 which is fairly low as compared to other branches.
The choice of a branch to pursue should entirely depend on the individual. We are in the 21st century and it is high time we free ourselves of stereotypes which cause hindrance in maintaining gender equality through society.

How good is Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering for a BE in mechanical engineering?
Yes, Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering is good for Mechanical Engineering. Be it faculty, labs, department, infrastructure, branch, or any other aspect, the college is a perfect fit.
The only disadvantage of DSCE Bangalore is that it doesn't provide any offers from core companies. The students of the mechanical branch end up getting a job in the IT sector. If any core job offers are available, these companies will only hire students in single digit.
Companies like Accenture, Cognizant, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra hire students irrespective of the branches.
If a job in the IT sector suits you after graduating from the mechanical branch, then you can opt for Dayanand Sagar College for Engineering as it is the best college. It will furnish a job but in the IT sector.
Which should I pursue between mechanical at UIET Chandigarh and metallurgical engineering at PEC Chandigarh?
Surely, Metallurgy at PEC over Mechanical in UIET. There are various important reasons behind this: Placements in PEC are better, companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. visit campus for placements.
Though metallurgy has fewer placements than other branches in PEC, once you are in PEC and if you are focused enough, you can go for an upgrade after 1st semester on the basis of CGPA. To aim for it, keep the following things in mind -
- At most, only the top 10% of the class can be upgraded.
- The branch you want to be upgraded to will only be available if it has vacant seats.

According to me, opting for CSE at 2nd generation IITs like IIT Patna is a better option. IIT Patna was established as a full-fledged IIT in 2008. Although comparatively newer, it has already created a huge impact in terms of placements and research.
- The CSE department of IIT Patna is excellent. The course offers good placements and faculty. The course curriculum of CSE at IIT Patna follows leaders in this domain like Harvard, IISc and IIT Bombay.
