Which branch is the best in IIT Roorkee for an MTech?
IIT Roorkee MTech admission is done on the basis of a valid GATE score. You must have the same bachelor's background or interdisciplinary branch related to your department.
Considering the placements and opportunities offered, some of the best departments in IIT Roorkee for MTech are:
- Computer Science has almost 100%placement

I was in the same position as you last year. I too had the same options for my Bachelor and I chose IIT Roorkee due to the following reasons:-

- IIT Roorkee Metallurgical branch has an Average Package of 21 LPA with IIT Gandhinagar/Mandi EE branch at 24 LPA.
- Old IITs have better infrastructure and college life as compared to new IITs.

I am a second year B.Tech Electrical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. The NIRF 2024 ranking of IIT Roorkee and other colleges is given below:

- BITS Pilani- Not Available (2023 Ranking- 25)
Though all the options mentioned by you are equally good, I am mentioning below the highlights of B.Tech Electrical at IIT Roorkee-
- The Electrical Engineering department of IIT Roorkee offers excellent placements. Top core, finance, and consulting companies visit the department for recruitments.
During 2023, IIT Roorkee recorded the highest package of INR 1.3 CPA, and the highest international package of INR 1.06 CPA. Total 63 recruiters visited the campus with 500 job offers. Some of the top recruiters for the placement season were- BCG, Bajaj Auto, Flipkart, and Tata Steel.
During 2024, Flipkart offered a package of INR 34 LPA, and the position of Software Developer. This offer was open to B.Tech CSE, Electrical and ECE students.
Myntra offered a INR 30 LPA package for the role of Software Development Engineer, and this offer was open to students of B.Tech (CSE, ECE, EE) & MSM. These are just two examples.

Choosing between BITS Goa CS and IIT Roorkee (Civil or Chemical branch) majorly depends on different factors including your preference, interest, and career goals.
- IIT Roorkee is a better option as it is one of the oldest engineering institutions in India with a great reputation for its academic engineering programs.
- The course fee for the first year of pursuing Civil or Chemical Engineering from IIT Roorkee is around 2.3 Lakhs.
- The average package offered to students is around INR 18 LPA with the highest package being INR 1.3 CPA.
Which college should I choose between IIT Roorkee and IIM Sirmaur for MBA?
I don’t even need to ponder over this question for a long time. The answer is very simple. You should choose IIT Roorkee over IIM Sirmaur for MBA. The reason being its new establishment. People don’t care if you are an IIM student unless you belong to the older ones. The new IIMs are yet to make a mark in the industry especially the likes of IIM Jammu and Sirmaur.
IIT Roorkee on the other hand is very good at placements and peer learning. Given the current situation of both institutes, IIT Roorkee is definitely the better option. The IIM tag offered by Sirmaur lacks credibility and even if it will be beneficial, it will be after some years and not right away.
What do they do in counselling for an M.Tech at IIT Roorkee?
A glimpse into the general procedure followed in counseling for an MTech at IIT Roorkee has been given below
- A list of applicants is prepared for students applying for that branch which is based on GATE score/ GATE rank (category-wise).
- The total seats are distributed category-wise for each branch and their specialization.
- The branch is allotted based on your IIT Roorkee rankings.
- One by one, candidates will be summoned for seat allotment based on their category-wise ranks
- These students are then required to get their documents verified. Once everything has been checked, the seat will be allotted.
- Candidates are also summoned to fill out the waiting list form with the assigned Demand Draft
- In case the said seat is vacant, it will be allotted to the student based on their waiting list rank else your money is refunded.
Counseling of branches is usually done randomly and the schedule of Counseling of Branch is released.
Are rooms allotted in IIT Roorkee based on the JEE AIR?
Yes, in IIT Roorkee rooms are somewhat allotted based on JEE AIR. One of my friends who studied there told me her neighbors shared the first 2 or 3 digits of rank. However, there is no partiality and only top rankers aren’t allotted the best rooms. The layout and size of rooms in most hostels are similar with minor differences.
The freshers are allotted the Rajendra Bhavan which has 3 blocks. The opening rankers might be given a slight advantage here. Most branch mates are neighbors unless you are an opening rank of the branch, you will be allotted the block where other rank openers reside.
From 2nd year, you will be sharing a hostel with PG students and Research scholars who complain about any noise.
Which one is better IT in IIIT Allahabad or Biotech in IIT Roorkee?
- College wise - IIT Roorkee > IIIT Allahabad
- Branch wise - IT > Biotech
However, this is a popular trend, and you don't have to follow it. It is best to make a decision based on your individual preferences.
First, you should make up your mind regarding the domain you want to continue with.

What is done in counselling at the IIT Roorkee MTech admission?
Counseling at IIT Roorkee is done through a number of steps given below
- You will receive emails regarding the documents you need to bring along with you. These include marks sheets and college certificates.
- The college fees will be specified in the mail. Make a demand draft and bring it along with you.
- In case, you opt out of the college, your fees will be refunded.
- You will then have to visit IIT Roorkee on the date specified in the mail along with all the documents.
- Students are summoned branch-wise. Everyone has to fill 2 forms, one containing your personal details while the other will need your demand draft details.
- One by one the students are called upon the stage on the basis of their gate score. Students are allotted seats in their desired specialization, provided that the seats are available
- Those who are unable to get their desired branch have 2 options; either withdraw themselves from the counseling process or submit their demand draft as an eligibility criterion for continuation in the counseling process in case of availability of seats later on.
All documents are verified well before submission of the demand draft. To be eligible for further rounds, one needs to submit his demand draft.
