Can someone who has opted for a branch change in IIT Kanpur share their experience?

Lives in Bangalore

My brother shared his branch change experience which wasn’t as difficult as people claim it to be. You did require more than average efforts and were challenging but not impossible. He was able to manage it by completing his assignments regularly and being focused in class. Your goal has to be to get a high CPI by being consistent with your studies.

At IIT Kanpur, you can either have a fun-filled college life experience or you can excel in academics, the choice is yours. It’s all about priorities. I know many nerds who worked day and night and eventually got CPI 10 after their first year. It’s all about your priorities. Basically, a 9+ CPI is not that difficult to achieve and a 10 requires some extra effort.

However, uncertainties always happen, and depending solely on branch change is not a wise decision.

Which is a better option: aerospace engineering in IIT Kanpur or production and industrial engineering in IIT Delhi?

SN
Saugata Nayak Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

IIT Kanpur has several advantages over IIT Delhi. A few are mentioned below:

  • Unlike IIT Delhi, branch change facility is not restricted to the first year only and one can change branches even after the 2nd year
  •  IIT Kanpur offers an enriched campus life with great relations between students as well as students and faculty.
  • There are no LAN restrictions at IIT Kanpur whereas, IIT Delhi restricts usage of LAN from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Lastly, once you enter IIT, your branch rarely matters. Your placements solely depend on your CG, your skills, and the efforts you invested throughout. So, go for a branch that matches your area of interest and you are good to go.

Who are the best professors from Mathematics department at IIT Kanpur?

AT
Ayushi Tiwari Posted On : April 25th, 2023
IIT Kanpur (2019)

My sister was a student in the Mathematics department at IIT Kanpur and her favorite professor was Professor Amit Mitra. He had many unique styles that made him the apple of everyone’s eye.

  • He would drop emails to students personally at the end of semesters commending them for their performance
  • He would always regrade his papers to minimize any issues
  • Once, a mid-semester paper was more difficult than usual. He conducted research on the students who performed poorly despite being regular and asked for their feedback on how to conduct classes in the future. He also discussed the mistakes these students made and the possible solutions.
  • He regularly conducted quizzes to evaluate the students on a regular basis.
  • He is a very emphatic, approachable, and understanding professor who gives it all to clear the concepts
  • His mobile number is public and anyone can contact him

All these distinguish him from other professors and tutors of the department!

What is taught in "Chemical Engineering" at IIT Kanpur?

KD
Kirti Das Posted On : April 25th, 2023
Studied at IIT Kanpur

Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur is a program that lays emphasis on the design and operation of chemical processes, as well as the development of new materials and technologies. Some of the core topics that are covered in this program include

  • thermodynamics
  • kinetics
  • chemical reaction engineering
  • process design
  • heat and mass transfer
  • process control

The syllabus of Chemical Engineering or that of any other branch of Engineering is the same across all universities and sometimes even the books are the same. Every Institute carries out lab work, practical assignments, and projects according to its faculty, infrastructure, and the quality of exposure offered to students. What differs is the ambiance in which students are taught. This largely depends on the quality of the batch the Institute attracts.

Many confuse chemistry with Chemical Engineering though both are poles apart. Chemistry defines the number of parameters, quantity, and form of chemicals to produce a product whereas Chemical Engineering specifies the method of operation in order to achieve the parameters.

The most common sector for chemical engineering is Oil & Gas, Refinery, and Petrochemicals. These industries will not only offer a high-paying job but also provide you with enough international exposure. A highly skilled chemical engineer is paid well.

Will a 10 CPI guarantee you a branch change to CSE at IIT Kanpur?

AT
Ayushi Tiwari Posted On : April 24th, 2023
IIT Kanpur (2019)

While branch change depends largely on CPI, it’s important to note that CPI is not the only deciding factor. In fact, there are other criteria that need to be fulfilled to be eligible for branch change.

  • A perfect 10 will convince the HoD of your capability to handle the immense workload of CSE.
  • The branch you are getting changed into should have availability of seats
  • If you are getting a branch change in the second year, then it might be difficult to cope with the coursework. For this, you will have to work extra in your summers.

In the end, I will recommend you not to join IIT Kanpur with the goal of branch change. Circumstances might differ and you will regret choosing a less preferred branch.
