Is ISB better than IIM A/B/C and FMS Delhi?

AS
Anandh Sundar Posted On : December 30th, 2022
PGDM IIM CALCUTTA in Marketing, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

My uncle is an alumnus of IIM Calcutta and also an ex-employee of ISB. So I asked him about the same. He told me that the faculty of IIM Calcutta focuses on the overall development of students and not just academics. They prepare you for the life ahead and not just for exams or placement. ISB on the other hand due to its short duration course is unable to cope with this aspect. Also, the fees of ISB are much more than that of IIMs. The only merit is that it saves you a year as the flagship program at IIMs is two years.

So ISB is a good choice for you only if

  • You are looking for a course of shorter duration
  • You are okay with spending a lot of money
  • You value the degree more than what you learn from it

Both the institutes are world-class and therefore not much comparison can be drawn from them.

How do I apply for a winter internship in IIM Ahmedabad?

AS
Abhilasha Sarkar Posted On : March 10th, 2022
former Intern at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

The procedure of application for a winter internship in IIM Ahmedabad is simple. But you need to be smart enough to get a reply from the professors.

  • First, you need to pick your area of interest from any one of the domains that IIM Ahmedabad offers.
  • Do some prior work related to your area of interest.
  • Make a CV that showcases your interests and career goals.
  • Write a cover letter that you are going to send to the professor. Keep your mail short and precise. Naturally, IIM Ahmedabad professors get a lot of emails, so your mail should interest them.
  • Don’t send the same cover letter to all the professors. Get to know the interest areas of the professors and modify your cover letter accordingly and send a mail only if your interest area clashes.

Also, don’t forget to mentions details regarding your availability, accommodation, and stipend details in the mail.

Will I get IIM A 100 percentile?

SB
Sampriti Bose Posted On : April 27th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

Firstly, it’s important to note that there are 2 types of CAT cutoffs for IIM admission: qualifying cutoff and final cutoff

Admission to IIMs or in fact any top B School requires the minimum CAT 2023 cutoff is expected to be the 90 percentile. A 99+ CAT percentile makes you eligible to apply for top IIMs like IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Lucknow, IIM Calcutta, and IIM Kozhikode. In fact, a 98+ in the CAT percentile guarantees a call from these Iimss.

Some top IIMs that sends calls to 98+ score are

  • IIM Lucknow
  • IIM Bangalore
  • IIM Kozhikode
  • IIM Ahmedabad
  • IIM Calcutta
  • IIM Shillong
  • IIM Indore

However, a very important point to consider is that these IIMs include other parameters for final selection. Usually, maximum weightage is given to CAT followed by academic profile, work experience, and gender diversity. So, a CAT score does not necessarily guarantee admission to IIM Ahmedabad.

For instance, a candidate with 100 percentile but no work experience might not get admission while a candidate with 95 percentile but excellent work experience might get admission to IIM Ahmedabad. So all factors should be considered and not just the CAT score.

Do SRCC students get into IIM Ahmedabad?

UK
Utsav Kamra Posted On : December 21st, 2022
Copy Editor at Careers360

Though Shri Ram College of Commerce has high cut-offs for admission at the graduation level, it is incorrect to assume that all SRCC students who pass the CAT exam will be admitted to IIM Ahmadabad. It is important to remember that work experience is highly valued at IIM Ahmadabad.

Many students from other colleges apply to prestigious institutes. Nothing can stop you from getting into IIM Ahmedabad if you are determined to do so. So remember that regardless of where you studied, you can still get into IIM Ahmedabad.

Why do people prefer IIM Calcutta over IIM Ahmedabad for finance-related jobs??

BJ
Bhawana Jain Posted On : December 21st, 2022
Studied at IIM Ahmedabad

The claim that IIM Calcutta is India's finance campus, is overstated. Yes, C has a slightly higher number of finance recruiters, but the majority of the top recruiters also attend IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore. The difference is in tier 2 and 3 finance companies, which Ahmedabad makes up for with good FMCG and consulting roles.

In general, placement processes in Calcutta are disorganized when compared to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and even FMS. Processes in Calcutta are woefully out of date, as evidenced by the recent dissent against place reps and the subsequent motion of no confidence.

It has been noticed that people only select IIM Calcutta over IIM Ahmedabad if they are having problems with location and not because they believe Calcutta to be superior to Ahmedabad.

Why is it that most chartered accountants go unplaced at IIM Ahmedabad?

RS
Ram Sen Posted On : November 29th, 2022
Studied at IIM

Chartered Accountants typically get the best placements at IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta. The courses of Chartered Accountants provide them with a distinct advantage (including, among other things, Accounts, Financial Reporting, and Financial Management) not only when studying at IIM but also when applying for placements.

Is it advisable to settle on JBIMS, if one only aimed for IIM's?

AP
Ashish Pai Posted On : February 20th, 2023
Studied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies

Comparing JBIMS with IIMs is highly unjustified as IIMs are way ahead of JBIMS or FMS even if we consider the ROI. They are unique in many aspects such as

  • IIM ABC and ISB is the only B-schools that offer Investment banking profiles in placement. Even if we look at other profiles, it’s easy to infer that they are much superior in terms of quality than the ones offered at JBIMS.
  • Being a pass out of IIMs or ISB, you have an upper hand in the higher spectrum of one’s career, i.e, leadership roles.
  • JBIMS or FMS lack the general ambiance and culture of a typical B School due to a lack of residential and campus facilities.
  • The peer quality of IIMS and ISB are much better than JBIMS whose gender ratio, diversity, and competitive exam are very one-dimensional.
  • The only significant aspect of JBIMS is the ROI which when negated makes JBIMS as mediocre as SP Jain and MDI.
  • The placement statistics of JBIMS are much similar to that of new IIMs or average B Schools like MDI, and SP Jain. They are in no way in comparison to the top IIMs even with batch sizes as small as 120.

So one should choose JBIMS or FMS over IIM only if one wants to spend low fees, take no loans, or pursue MBA in Mumbai or Delhi.

Is 80% good for IIM A?

AR
Ahana Roy Posted On : April 27th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2016)

Students willing to get admission to IIM Ahmedabad desperately look for the most suitable profile that attracts calls for admission. After analyzing the academic profiles of the current and previous batches, I have made a rough draft of the kind of academic profile required for admission to IIM Ahmedabad.

Percentage

10th (%age of batch in this range)

12th (%age of batch in this range)

Graduation (%age of batch in this range)

90-100

86

70.8

14.86

80-89

13.3

25.81

46.15

70-79

0.91

3.6

28.4

60-69

-

0.26

8.34

50-59

-

-

0.65

A few conclusions that you can draw from the table above

  • Students with less than 80% marks in 10th and/or 12th, and/or less than 60% marks in graduation have fewer chances of admission than other candidates.
  • A score of less than 70% in 10th or 12th has the least chance of admission to IIM Ahmedabad.
  • Students with a graduation percentage of around 70% are likely to get admission provided that they have excellent SSC and HSC scores.
  • The maximum weightage (65%) is given to the CAT score and thus an above-average profile of 80+/80+/70+, combined with decent work makes you more eligible for being shortlisted by IIM Ahmedabad for their AWT-PI round.

Concludingly, 80% is a decent score to get admission into IIM Ahmedabad.

Is IIM Ahmedabad better than IIM Bangalore and Calcutta?

PR
Parth Reddy Posted On : May 30th, 2023
Studied at IIM Ahmedabad

Yes, IIM Ahmedabad is certainly better than IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta. Here are a few points to prove the same

  • IIM Ahmedabad is situated in an alcohol-deprived state called Gujarat and students face lesser distractions while IIM Bangalore is in the pub capital, and IIM Calcutta is in the city of ITC.
  • The nearest airport to IIM Ahmedabad is just 30 minutes away thus providing great connectivity while the nearest airport to IIM Bangalore is 2 hours away and to IIM Calcutta is 1 hour away.
  • IIM Ahmedabad has a small and cozy 67-acre campus, with a beautifully maintained lawn while IIM Bangalore has a massive 100-acre campus and IIM Calcutta has a 135-acre campus, situated in the midst of a forest.

Placements-wise, I deem all the IIMs to be somewhat similar with the same companies offering similar roles and packages to their students.

It can thus be concluded that IIM Ahmedabad is better than IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta.

Which is better for an MBA with a finance focus, IIM Ahmedabad vs. IIM Calcutta? Please also read the notes below this question.

M.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2016)

IIM Calcutta is India's finance campus. You must examine the books, journals, and periodicals in the libraries at IIM C and IIM A to see the difference.

The majority of jobs available after completing a PGP at IIM Ahmedabad are in the consulting industry. They also have a phenomenal incubation center for entrepreneurs (CIIE, IIM A).

The A versus C debate is never-ending. Both are excellent business schools. However, if the OP is financially secure, then the problem is solved. The solution has been found. You belong at IIM C.
