What should I take, CSE at IIT Ropar or IIT Dhanbad?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : July 28th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

One of my friends was in a similar dilemma when he got both CSE at IIIT Delhi and CSE at IIT Patna.

Although he lived in Delhi, he did not choose IIIT Delhi and went for IIT Patna instead. There were a number of reasons why he chose Patna.

  • He wanted to avail the benefits of the IIT tag.
  • He believed that the new IITs are developing at a fast rate and in a few years, their CSE departments would be at par with that of old IITs.
  • IITs also have a better crowd because of the high cutoffs.
  • IIT Patna being a government-funded college, has amazing infrastructure, placements, facilities, and labs.
  • When it comes to cultural fests, nothing can beat the IITs.
  • IITs have more interdisciplinary activities which aid in research and also give you an insight into the other departments.

Ultimately, Delhi has a better location but that is outweighed by the IIT tag.

How is IIT Delhi for M.tech in Civil Engineering from placement point of view?

DS
Dipti Sinha Posted On : April 10th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2022)

Most Government, as well as Private companies, prefer BTech graduates to MTech or MS graduates. One needs an MTech degree only if one wants to enter academia or research. The reason they prefer a fresher is that they consider them flexible and thus sponsor them for higher study in their field of requirement.

M.Tech degree is not required to secure a good job and I will recommend you start preparing for GATE instead and target a PSU job. The written tests and interviews during the process of GATE Preparation will increase your chances of selection in the future.

SP
Sona Panday Posted On : April 5th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2018)

Yes, IIT Delhi MTech Machine Design students do get placed with decent roles and packages. In fact, after IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi is the most preferred IIT for students mailing to get enrolled in the MTech program. The 2 main reasons for this are listed below:

  • IIT Delhi’s location is excellent for ESE preparation
  • The overall placements of MTech are better than m most other IITs

MTech Program offered by the Mechanical Department of IIT Delhi has a decent placement scenario with a placement percentage of around 70-80%. Design stream has the best placements in the entire department in terms of the average package as well as placement percentage. Mainly roles in R&D and a few managerial roles are offered.

How do I choose between IIT Delhi engineering physics, civil, production & industrial, and chemical engineering?

PS
Pawan Sinha Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2020)

I will restrict my answer to Engineering Physics and Chemicals only as I know the same only.

  • The major criterion followed at IIT Delhi by all the branches is a well-maintained CG. To secure good placements one has to constantly score a good CG throughout the program.
  • During your admission, the department does not play any role but your 85 percent constraint on minimum possible strength does.
  • Engineering Physics is a unique branch for those highly passionate about Physics and want to pursue higher studies in the same
  • To secure core jobs, one has to move to MTech in Engineering Physics from BTech in Engineering Physics.
  • For Chemical Engineering students, BTech is more than enough to secure decent packages and great research opportunities outside India.
  • Consultancy and Analytics jobs are offered equally to students of all the departments
  • Engineering Physics graduates usually take up consultancy or IT jobs
  • Chemical Engineering is the most laid-back department of IIT Delhi with very flexible academics thus making it easy to maintain a decent CG throughout.

I wouldn’t suggest anyone go for Engineering Physics if they have no intention of pursuing it later. Instead, look for other options in BTech and explore your interests.

NIT Trichy and IIT Delhi are two highly ranked engineering colleges in India.

Here is a comparison table between CSE branch of NIT Trichy and Electrical branch of IIT Delhi for your reference:

IIT Delhi EE

NIRF 2024 Ranking: Engineering

Top Recruiters (2023)

Google, Infosys,facebook, Oracle, ITC Limited

Microsoft, CISCO, Accenture, Brain & company, Jaguar Land Rover India Limited

The branch-wise placement details for IIT Delhi are unfortunately not available. However, as seen above, both the colleges offer really good placements in B.Tech programs.

But IIT Delhi Electrical is a better option because this institution carries a bigger brand name, and the ‘IIT’ tag. This will be immensely important for you when applying for higher studies after your graduation. Moreover, plenty of employees give preference to an ‘IIT’ tag over an ‘NIT’ tag.

IIT Delhi is located in the national capital, which is really beneficial in terms of exposure. Moreover, IIT Delhi will give you much more opportunities as compared to NIT Trichy. You can learn coding in your leisure time while studying electrical, in case you are interested in working in the IT sector.

Because of these reasons, I would recommend you choose EE at IIT Delhi over CSE at NIT Trichy.

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023

Firstly, at IIT Delhi, the first day is called Day 1 and not Day 0.

Day 1

Obviously, the most elite companies with the best packages visit the campus on the first day.

  • Consulting: A major chunk of companies visiting on the first day is consulting companies like Mckinsey, B.C.G., Bain, Parthenon, A.T. Kearney Diamond, Opera, Essex. The usual packages offered range from 15-15 LPA while some offer exceptional packages like INR 29 LPA.
  • Finance: The Finance companies that visit the campus offer excellent packages with the most common being Goldman Sachs, WorldQuant, Deutsche Bank, etc.
  • Core: A large number of core companies like Schlumberger, GSK, ITC, and HUL offer decent packages of around 16-20 LPA.
  • Computer Science: Being the coding hub, IIT Delhi has a large number of Computer Science companies, like Google USA and India, Samsung Korea and India, Microsoft USA and India, Facebook USA, Tower Research, Code Nation, Nutanix, Visa, IBM, DirectI, etc. visiting the campus. Most of the companies offer packages higher than INR 20 LPA.

Day 2

The second-day witnessed fewer consulting companies and more Analytics companies than the first day. Companies offering Management roles start visiting from the second day and keep coming till Days 4-5. These include Flipkart, Housing, Snapdeal, etc.
