Should I choose mechanical or civil engineering?

SA
Saransh Agarwal Posted On : February 22nd, 2022
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Cars and Automobiles, Sikkim Manipal University (2016)

Mechanical and Civil Engineering are core branches of engineering and both offer good future prospects. You should choose one according to your interest.

  • Both Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering require good knowledge of Applied and Material Physics. If you are interested in Physics, you should consider other branches of engineering.
  • Even though the base of these branches is Physics, the syllabus differs widely. So you should take a look at the syllabus for both branches before choosing one.
  • Talk to the people who are currently working in these domains and get to know what exactly they are doing. This can help you a lot to select the right course for you.
  • It will be better if you take a look at the M.Tech syllabuses for both branches as well. This will clear your vision in case you want to pursue higher studies in the future.
  • You will get decent job opportunities from either of these branches. There are govt sector jobs as well as the private sector.

So, factor in all these points and see what interests you more.

What is the difference among CSIR, JRF, NET, and UGC NET?

SS
Sayantika Sen Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
Studied International Relations at Jawaharlal Nehru University (2019)

To understand the difference; we need to know these terms one by one. All these examinations are directed towards research oriented professions. UGC and CSIR both are statutory organisations. The description are as follows:

National Eligibility Test (NET)

  • This is a requisite examination for individuals aspiring to teach in universities or colleges.
  • It prominently has two categories; assistant professor and junior research fellowship (JRF).
  • It is conducted in 81 subjects and is acceptable all across the country.

Junior Research Fellowship

University Grants Commission conducts NET exam and it tries to present two group of qualifiers which are as follows:

  • NET AP – Assistant professor qualified is eligible to apply for lecturership profiles in universities.
  • NET AP & JRF- Candidates clearing the JRF cut-off precisely are financed by UGC to carry research/ PhD in their fields of interest. A specified monetary amount is paid to every candidate.

Council Of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

This is a premiere research institute in India conducting eligibility tests & fellowship for science and science related subjects. The subjects included are :

  • Chemical Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences

The recent addition to this framework is in the form of the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is a government body established to look up to the administrative forefront of how these exams are to be conducted.

Both CSIR & UGC have now transferred their entire exam process to NTA to make it more efficient & productive.

Can Jadavpur University ever be good enough to compete with the top IITs If not why?

SP
Shreya Pandey Posted On : October 4th, 2021
Studied B.E. Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering,Jadavpur University (2021)

Having some friends at Jadavpur University, I can list some problems that students usually face:

  1. As Jadavpur University is a regional university, it lacks the exposure what central institutes usually attract. For the same reason, the administration is a little lazy and students enjoy too much freedom.
  2. Most of the professors are quite qualified and experienced, you can find a lot of them who aren’t up to the mark. Here, it becomes quite difficult to compete with the level of IIT and NIT professors.
  3. Students at Jadavpur are not creative and do not think out of the box. They usually like to go with the flow and simply follow the syllabus for good placement.
  4. The placement scenario of the CSE department might be at a height but sometimes, other departments suffer and couldn't get as great opportunities.
  5. The UG research quality in JU is not up to the mark. Although many students indulge in research and projects, the publication quality is not at par. They just make some small change in an algorithm and produce two/three papers but are not recognized very kindly by foreign universities.

All in all, JU needs improvements with the serious involvement of all the students, teachers, staff, alumni of JU. By tackling all the problem areas together, it can shine like IITs and NITs in the near future.

What is the current placement and package scenario in Jadavpur University for B.Tech courses?

NK
Nitin Kumar Posted On : October 4th, 2021
Studied Computer Science and Engineering at Jadavpur University (2017)

Jadavpur University has managed to survive the recession to give its student a handsome placement package. My friend is currently studying there and their placement happens all around the years, unlike IITs where placement happens for two weeks or so.

Like most engineering colleges, CSE as usual tops the placement with their highest packages. The most popular recruiters include Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, etc.

Almost 100% of students are placed in all the branches. Here are some branch-wise placement statistics for the year 2020.

Departments Average Package Highest Package
CSE 20.6 LPA 58 LPA (Google)
IT 15 LPA 51 LPA (Shopee Singapore)
EE 9.73 LPA 65 LPA (Atlassian)
Mechanical Engineering 8 LPA 17.6 LPA (GAIL)
Chemical Engineering 6 LPA 16.8 LPA (AB InBev)
Production 7.2 LPA 22 LPA (Goldman Sachs)

Another good thing at Jadavpur University is that most of the big IT/ Analytics firms do not discriminate between the branches and allow them to sit for their placements. This way, you can grab a job in any field that you would like if you develop an interest in it in your college tenure.

What makes it possible for BITS Pilani CSE students to fetch an average annual placement package of 27.07 LPA, the highest in India for any undergraduate CS course?

DS
Divya Saraf Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Lives in Hyderabad

BITS Pilani was able to fetch the highest average in India for any UG CS course owing to the numerous international offers that it received. I don’t consider including the international offers after converting them into Indian offers and then calculating the average as things like stocks and bonuses for subsequent years are overlooked. Thus, the resultant average is inflated and misleading. No doubt BITS is a great institute but being a private one it certainly publishes exaggerated ads and misleading figures to attract the crowd.

BITS Placement Unit is infamous for its actions and bias so the inflated figures also served the purpose of silencing the ones that criticized the unit.

The only solution to this problem is for colleges to come together and decide on a common declaration format for job offers. The Indian and international offers should be normalized according to purchasing power parity, and stocks made available after 3 years of working should not be considered part of a person's salary 'package'.

NG
Neha Ghosh Posted On : February 3rd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

IIT Kanpur is the college that every engineering student aspires to attend. The life at campus is not a life you forget as it brings in it a lot of memories to cherish. To understand the life a clear description has to be focussed at primary factors which are:

  • Campus Life

A campus having 1000 acres of land with minimal restrictions and interference. Open Air Theatre (OAT) is one of the features to focus upon. It is equipped with high-tech facilities and maintains an environment of fests. The size, scale and beauty of campus is worth exploring. A huge population of students are the main component of its vibrant life.

  • Hostel Life

Another important element of IIT Kanpur is its hostel life. The campus consists of a close to 11 hostels having great spacious infrastructure. Clubs & councils are also an integral part of lifestyle. The student’s gymkhana is prominently very active.

  • Academics & Events

IIT Kanpur has the toughest curriculum among the IITs. It has an altogether different grading system. There is no strict policy for attendance but certain professors can make it a part of course structure.

  • Extra Curriculars

A lot of activities take place ranging from sport facilities to clubs & societies are present in the most efficient form in the campus. IIT Kanpur provides a platform for providing enough opportunities for personality development. Students flourish across all domains both academically & professionally.

Overall IIT Kanpur where dreams come true but you need to work really hard to make that happen. A premiere institute which offers all the possibilities for the growth and development of their students. Students even after graduating from IIT Kanpur, still associate with the institution due to its sheer strength and likeability.

How is Thapar University?

AM
Agnish Mukherjee Posted On : August 8th, 2023
BE from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

Thapar University was established in 1956. When it was a young institution, it ranked among the top 20 universities/colleges in India, and its students achieved great heights. Even today, many students from this University do immensely well and bring honor to it.

This institution has a long-standing reputation and its alumni work in top MNCs as well as are part of the Indian Civil Services. Some of the top companies where its alumni are presently working include- Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Twitter, Cisco, Uber, VMWare etc.

Even though Thapar University is still a brand name, newly opened institutions like DAIICT, BITS Goa, BITS Hyd, etc. are outperforming it significantly. The university has seen a significant decline in its glorious days in the past. This is because since 2008, due to its owner’s financial constraints, the crowd quality has declined and things have become more money-driven. There are few hikes every year. Unlike before, there are around 1300-1500 students on campus in the present times.

Thus, Thapar University has fallen down from its days of glory and significant steps need to be taken to revive its lost glory.
