The centralised admission process will help streamline the admission process in the 400 colleges and 16 universities in the State and ensure fair distribution of seats among students.
New Delhi: West Bengal’s Education Minister Bratya Basu has announced a centralised admission process for admission to undergraduate courses in the State-run universities. The admission process will be conducted through a common portal and is scheduled to begin from June 24, 2024.
The centralised admission process will help streamline the admission process in the 400 colleges and 16 universities in the State. It has been launched with an aim to simplify the application process and ensure fair distribution of seats among students.
Minister Bratya Basu highlighted that the new system would eliminate the problem of students with high marks taking multiple seats across different colleges. The Centralised Admission Portal, which has been in the works for the last ten years, would provide a consolidated platform to college applicants from across the country.
“For provisional admission, applicants would no longer have to resort to making in-person manual applications henceforth,” School and Higher Education Minister Bratya Basu told media persons at Kolkata’s Bikash Bhavan on Wednesday. He added that no extra application charges would have to be paid, apart from the final enrolment fee for the course of choice at the end of the admissions procedure.
In the portal, students can apply to a maximum of 25 undergraduate courses, out of the 7217 courses available in the system.

How will the West Bengal CAP Process Work?
In the centralised process, one candidate will be offered only one seat at a time, depending on his results with the scope to get a better opportunity in case there is a vacancy elsewhere. The merit list for admissions will be system-generated, ensuring a transparent and efficient selection process.
Candidates who will have their names on the merit list must either accept their seat or can apply for a better seat allocation. Those accepting their seat need to verify their documents and pay the admission fee for the respective college and course.
You must note that the centralised admission system will not apply to prestigious institutions such as Presidency University, Jadavpur University, and some autonomous and minority colleges. These institutions will continue to follow their existing admission processes.
In the central admissions portal, a single applicant cannot enrol to multiple courses at once, but can opt for a single upgrade to a more preferred seat in the second round of admissions. “When the first round of admission procedures are complete, a second merit list will be brought out based on the availability of seats. If students did not get their preferred choice the first time, they can opt for an upgrade based on the second merit list as per seat availability,” Mr. Basu said.
In case a student wishes to switch to a different course, they would only have to pay the excess amount based on the difference in admission fees between the two courses. “If the fees of the second course is lower than that of the first, the balance amount would be refunded automatically to the applicants’ bank accounts at the end of the admissions procedure,” Mr. Basu said. He added that no additional procedures have to be undertaken by the students to retrieve the balance amount in admission fees in case of a change.
