The NEET 2026 exam has been cancelled due to allegations of a question paper leak and organized examination malpractices. The investigation has highlighted the following issues:
- Pre-Circulated Question Papers: Investigations by the police highlighted that a pre-circulated "guess paper" matched roughly 100 to 120 questions in the Chemistry and Biology sections of the actual exam.
- Advance Leaks: The leaked material was circulating in major coaching hubs (such as Sikar, Rajasthan) up to a month in advance and was allegedly being sold to aspirants for large sums of money right up until the night before the test, as highlighted by the authorities.
The NEET UG 2026 exam was conducted on 3 May 2026 across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, with over 22.79 lakh candidates appearing. Reports of irregularities began surfacing within hours of the exam concluding. Key timeline:
-
1 May 2026: A "guess paper" first surfaces in Sikar, Rajasthan
- 3 May 2026: NEET UG 2026 conducted; paper leak allegations begin trending
- 6 May 2026: NTA releases provisional answer key — fastest ever release
- 8 May 2026: NTA refers the matter to central agencies for independent verification
- 10 May 2026: NTA issues press release acknowledging the investigation
- 11 May 2026: Rajasthan SOG confirms 140 questions matched the actual paper
- 12 May 2026: NTA cancels the exam, CBI probe ordered
| Feature | Re-NEET 2024 | Re-NEET 2026 |
| Trigger | Grace marks controversy (loss-of-time compensation) | Alleged paper leak with 140-question match |
| Candidates affected | 1,563 (only grace-mark candidates) | 22.79 lakh (all candidates) |
| Re-exam date | 23 June 2024 (decided by Supreme Court) | To be notified (NTA + Govt. of India decision) |
| Investigation agency | CBI (after SC direction) | CBI (referred by Govt. of India directly) |

The Re-NEET 2026 is significantly broader in scope than the 2024 retest, which was limited to a small group of grace-mark candidates following a Supreme Court directive. This time, every single candidate who appeared on 3 May 2026 will need to retake the exam.
| Step | Action |
| 1 | Visit nta.ac.in and neet.nta.nic.in daily — fresh notification expected within 7–10 days. |
| 2 | Do not delete your old application number, password, or May 3 admit card — they will be needed for the re-issued admit card. |
| 3 | Resume daily revision — focus on NCERT Biology, Physics formulas, and Inorganic Chemistry. Treat the next 6 weeks as a second buffer for preparation. |
| 4 | Do not trust any Telegram channel, WhatsApp group, or YouTube video claiming Re-NEET dates. Only the NTA notice is authentic. |
| 5 | Re-attempt 2024 and 2025 NEET papers under timed conditions to maintain exam readiness. |
| 6 | For mental wellbeing, talk to your school counsellor or parents — this is an institutional issue, not a personal failure. |

The NTA had released the NEET UG 2026 provisional answer key on 6 May 2026, just three days after the exam, the fastest-ever release. With the cancellation of the May 3 exam, this answer key now stands void. The objection window that was being awaited has also been rendered redundant.
Candidates who had paid the objection fee (Rs. 200 per question) will reportedly be refunded. The Re-NEET 2026 will have its own fresh question paper, provisional answer key, objection window, and final answer key, none of the May 3 exam data carries forward to the re-exam.
The MCC NEET UG Counselling 2026 schedule, which was tentatively expected to begin in mid-July 2026, will now be delayed. The counselling cannot start until the Re-NEET result is declared.
Based on the new tentative timeline, the entire counselling cycle is now expected to shift by 4–6 weeks. Aspirants targeting the 2026–27 MBBS academic session should plan for a compressed counselling window between August and October 2026.

The Government of India has referred the alleged NEET UG 2026 paper leak to the Central Bureau of Investigation following findings shared by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group.
The CBI will examine whether the breach was the work of an organised network and trace its path from the suspected source believed to be a printing facility in Jaipur, through its reported spread across six locations: Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Kerala.
Approximately 15 individuals have already been taken in for questioning. NTA has pledged to hand over all relevant data, documentation, and technical records to support the inquiry.
