Officials of Himachal Pradesh University said on 18 July that no decision had been made regarding promoting and holding the examinations of first and second year students, contrary to reports.
The controller of examinations of Himachal Pradesh University, Dr JS Negi, asserted that only the examinations of final-year students will be given, in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), University Grants Commission (UGC) and the state government.
Student unions such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are demanding that the HPU promote all undergraduate and postgraduate students without giving them examinations, on the basis of performance in the previous semesters.
These groups are arguing that holding examinations in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic could be detrimental to the health of students and teaching staff.
