NEET Paper Leak Case: Court Remands Four Accused to CBI Custody

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four individuals in connection with malpractices in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scandal. The court has remanded these suspects to CBI custody to continue interrogation and investigation till July 2, 2024. The step is taken to gather evidence during the investigation procedure.

One journalist and three others were among the four arrested. These arrests show that a large network was involved in the malpractice and several suspects are arrested from various states, including Jharkhand and Gujarat. The CBI's ongoing investigation is to punish those involved in fraudulent activities.

Accusations and Allegations

The suspects are accused of using unethical practices to manipulate the NEET UG 2024 results. Some are charged with manipulating candidates to obtain higher scores through illicit means. These activities demeaned the integrity of the examination process and raised serious concerns about fairness and transparency.

Four arrested persons, the school teacher Tushar Bhatt, principal of Jay Jalaram School Purushottam Sharma, and middlemen Vibhor Anand and Arif Vohra were sent to CBI custody. The fifth accused education consultant, Parsuram Roy wasn’t remanded. All five accused are currently jailed in the Godhra sub-jail. CBI lawyer Dhruv Malik informed the court that although the police had conducted an investigation, the agency required custody of the accused for a new inquiry.

The court allowed the CBI a custody period to investigate the malpractice. This custody period is essential for the CBI to gather more detailed information about the fraudulent activities. The legal proceedings are expected to show how the malpractices were orchestrated and who else might be involved.

CBI Lawyer’s Stand

According to Gujarat Police, the accused told the candidates not to attempt a question if they did not know the answer. The accused later filled in the correct answers on the answer sheet. Earlier today, the CBI raided seven locations related to NEET malpractices in Gujarat. Last week, a CBI team recorded statements from six candidates who allegedly paid one of the accused. On May 8, Godhra Police registered a case against three individuals for allegedly charging INR 10 lakh each to help 27 candidates clear the NEET-UG.

According to Malik, a preliminary investigation by the CBI has revealed that the accused manipulated candidates to use illegal methods to achieve high scores in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for medical courses and chose Jay Jalaram School in Godhra as their examination center.

Further, Malik stated that "Last year, when NEET was held at the same school, the accused realised that the answer sheets were kept in the same school overnight before being dispatched. This gave them an idea. They then asked their students to choose this centre to execute their plans”
