Students left admission offers from IIM Udaipur and IIM Kashipur to study in MDI Gurgaon which in turn kept them on an unpredictable waitlist. Affected students were promised a full refund for withdrawing their admission offers.

New Delhi: The Management Development Institute (MDI) has cancelled admission offer letters of 132 students who were previously provided with PGDM IB admission offers. All this admission withdrawal process was informed just one week before the class commencement.
According to various sources, MDI Gurgaon has also withdrawn admission offers which were made for its flagship program - PGDM at the time of publication. The MDI Gurgaon stated this matter to the students by emails sent to the students whose admission offers were rescinded.
This situation fueled the protest on June 18, 2024 at the college campus by students and some parents who were affected by this decision of the college. Though students were promised a full refund for withdrawing their admission offers.
What is the Students’ Stand on this Matter?
According to the students, “They have given 132 people excess offers and are now offering deferred admission, but that will waste a whole year. People have left jobs and taken loans. They will have to pay the interest on the loan, have a gap year on their record…We are asking them to put us in another branch but they are not agreeing to even that.”
Many students left admission offers from second-generation IIMs like IIM Udaipur and IIM Kashipur just to study in the MDI Gurgaon which ranks in 13th position by the NIRF. Many candidates left their full-time jobs to study the MDI Gurgaon PGDM IB program which was scheduled to start on June 21, 2024.
Why Did MDI Gurgaon Cancelled PGDM IB Admission 2024 Offers?
As per sanctioned by the AICTE, MDI Gurgaon has 120 seats for the PGDM IB program. Between the last week of May and the first week of June, the institute sent offer letters to the students who registered for admission to the PGDM IB program.
MDI Gurgaon sent more admission offer letters than its 120-seat capacity. Consequently, the institute sent emails to such students on June 14, 2024 warning of such mishaps in upcoming days.
In the emails, MDI Gurgaon said, “Following standard industry practices and based on the dropout rates observed over the past two years, we have issued provisional admission letters to candidates. However, due to the current market demand and changes in the scenario, the dropout rate this year is lower than anticipated. Consequently, in line with regulatory guidelines, it may not be possible to accommodate all the candidates who have been issued provisional admission letters… We are sending this letter as a word of caution to ensure that you are fully informed and can make your decisions accordingly."
After the emails received on June 14, the candidates raised their concerns to the college authorities. As a response, the college replied on June 18 with a suggestion stating that they would put these students on a waitlist and on September 15, 2024, in case of any dropouts from the admitted students, these waitlist students will be taken back.
Another Suggestion given by the MDI was, “You may also consider the possibility of deferring your admissions to the next 2025-27 batch should you wish to explore the same and we will offer you a guaranteed seat in the next 2025-27 batch with the current fee of the 2024-26 batch, subject to the approval of AICTE.”
