Madhya Pradesh to Introduce More MBBS Textbooks

New Delhi: According to MP Education Minister Vishwas Sarang, the Madhya Pradesh government is all set to release three textbooks for Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry for MBBS students in Hindi. This is the first state to implement the NEP 2020's recommendations.

In February 2023, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan declared that MP would be the first state in the nation to offer medical education in Hindi. The textbooks will be distributed beginning with the current academic year.

The first set of three textbooks has been transliterated nearly eight months after the declaration. Bhopal's Lal Parade field, Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the books on October 16, 2023 at Bhopal's Lal Parade field.

These textbooks will be introduced at Government Medical College (GMC), where there are 4,080 medical seats, as a trial experiment and later at 13 further colleges. The release of Hindi textbooks for second-year students will begin next year.

Vishwas Sarang, the state's minister of medical education, drew attention to the fact that scientific terms like blood pressure and spine were written in Devanagari script rather than being translated.

"These volumes have undergone a meticulous process for the full transliteration. First, a task force was established to provide Hindi medical studies, and members of this task force interviewed a wide range of stakeholders, including faculty, students, and subject-matter specialists. Through our government website, we also asked for everyone's feedback," Sarang stated.

He claimed that the task committee looked into the approaches used in other nations where medical instruction is given in the native tongue, like Germany and China.

The next step was to track out the textbooks' publishers. According to Sarang, the candidates for anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry were narrowed down to Vikram Singh, Indu Khurana, and Dinesh Puri and their consent was requested.

At that moment, a conference with staff members from the medical education department was organised to request authorization for volunteer additions to the team for transliteration.

The first round of meetings resulted in the identification of 97 individuals, who were then separated into three groups, one for each of the three subjects, and given texts that had been approximately translated from English to Hindi using software, according to Sarang.

We had been working relentlessly for 8 to 9 hours per day for the previous six months, said Richa Gupta, a physiology department operator who was also on the team translating the books.

In order to complete the project while there were reviews, we even worked on Sundays. Along the way, we picked up a few new words and their definitions. After the transliteration, a second validation panel composed of teachers and subject experts looked over the textbooks, according to Sarang.

Although there will be separate batches for Hindi and English medium students, the majority of the material will still be taught in both languages during class.

"It is good that local language is being incorporated," said Dr Sachet Saxena, a former president of the MP Junior Doctor Association who received his MBBS from the GMC in Bhopal and is currently enrolled in a super speciality program in Bangalore.

Students with a Hindi background benefit, but it could also be a barrier. As everything in subsequent phases, post-graduation, and worldwide medical journals are in English, we need to work on the general development of students.
