New Delhi: The KIIT School of Biotechnology has successfully hosted the 9th Biotech Industry Conclave-2023, themed "Biotechnology and its Expanding Horizons," for two days.

The conclave kicked off with the involvement of over 30 industry leaders, featuring five panel discussions and 22 talks addressing the synergy between industry and academia, along with strategies for preparing students to thrive in the rapidly evolving biotech domain at the KIIT School of Biotechnology campus.

During his Keynote address, Sanjeev Vashishta, MD of Pathkind Diagnostics, highlighted the importance of fostering a dynamic partnership between the industry and academia to propel the biotech sector to unprecedented heights.

Given India's notable technological prowess and its robust presence in the IT sector, a symbiotic biotech-digital alliance could position the country as a pivotal innovator across healthcare, food production, knowledge-based economy, digital governance, and the crucial task of narrowing the socio-economic divide, he said.

Despite ranking 139th in per capita income despite its position as the 5th largest global economy in terms of GDP, this collaboration has the potential to usher in transformative changes.

Vashishta further pointed out the transformative potential of merging biotechnology and digital technology, envisioning its ability to drive substantial progress towards establishing a sustainable society in India.

He mentioned that emerging frontiers such as genetic engineering, gene therapy, and advanced bio-medical research aimed at improving medicines, vaccines, and pandemic readiness have the potential to reshape the world.

He encouraged students to capitalize on the occasion of the two-day conclave to uncover their capabilities and seize these prospects.

CEO of EMPE Diagnostics, Vaggu Raghavendra Goud, pointed that India currently boasts 730 biotech companies along with 500 indigenous products. However, he emphasized the industry's persistent hunger for further innovations and novel concepts in the market.

Goud stressed the pivotal role students can play by drawing inspiration from platforms like the KIIT-TBI conclave. With the pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical sector's potential to evolve into a sector valued at Rs 5,000 crore in the near future, Goud urged students to recognize the significance of collaborative endeavors in shaping the upcoming landscape.

Prof Saranjit Singh, Pro Vice-Chancellor at KIIT-DU, expressed that Biotech and Digital Technology holds the future, just as the automobile industry, once rooted in Mechanical Engineering, has now evolved into a sector driven 35 percent by digital innovations."

Highlighting the significance of VLSI designs in crafting intricate circuits (chips) and the anticipated demand for interdisciplinary projects in the future, Prof Singh, a seasoned expert in Mechanical Engineering, advised students to refine their skills accordingly.

He also underscored the importance of being "market-ready" to effectively seize upcoming opportunities.

In his opening statements, Prof. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty, Registrar at KIIT-DU, narrated the 17-year journey of KIIT-TBI, describing how it has evolved into a dynamic hub for technology incubation.

He noted its role in nurturing the startup ecosystem, developing successful prototypes for production, and making substantial contributions to the research and development sector.
