IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus Launches M.Tech in Ocean Structure, Admission Open Till June 20

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Zanzibar campus has introduced a new M.Tech program in Ocean Structures effective from the 2024-25 academic session. Interested students can apply until June 20, 2024. 

Candidates who pass the screening test will be invited for online interviews. The screening test is scheduled for June 30, and admission letters will be issued on July 15.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for IIT Madras Zanzibar M.Tech Ocean Structure Admission 2024?

• Applicants must have a four-year undergraduate degree in civil engineering with at least 60% marks. 
• Selection is based on undergraduate marks and performance in a screening test and interview, with each criterion carrying a 50% weightage. 
• The program is open to candidates of all nationalities and offers two specializations: ‘Offshore and Ship Structures’ and ‘Port Harbour and Coastal Structures’. Specialization selection depends on the CGPA at the end of the first semester.

What are the Highlights of IIT Madras Zanzibar M.Tech Ocean Structure Admission?

The curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of the oil, gas, and maritime sectors, covering marine and offshore hydrodynamics, structural design for offshore platforms, and port and harbor structures. 

Students will study at the international campus for the first, second, and fourth semesters, and at IIT Madras Chennai in India for the third semester.

Professor Preeti Aghalayam, dean of the School of Engineering and Science and the director-in-charge of the Zanzibar campus, emphasized the significance of this program, stating, “The blue economy is a critical area for Zanzibar and globally, necessitating skilled human resources in this field.”

Professor Dr. S. Nallayarasu, head of the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras, highlighted the career prospects for graduates, noting, “This program creates new career opportunities in ocean engineering, particularly in offshore industry, port, and harbor development. It aligns with the Maritime India Vision 2047 and will play a crucial role in training professionals.”
