New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras inaugurated its 17th academic department, the department of medical sciences and technology, on May 11, 2023 (Thursday), as part of its effort to diversify beyond engineering and towards the objective of inclusive education.

According to IIT Madras, the stream would combine the most recent advances in engineering and medical.

A PhD programme for doctors, an MS by research programme for doctors, an MS in medical sciences and engineering, and a PhD programme for graduates of science and engineering will all be available. It will also provide a four-year bachelor's curriculum in medical sciences and engineering.

Additionally, there is a curriculum called the entrepreneurial doctorate that enables doctors to develop a product while receiving advice and support from IIT Madras.

According to V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, this field would help people to understand the human body through the prism of technology. He predicted that this department would be where computer science engineering is now in ten years.

It intends, among other things, to develop a pool of "physician-scientists" in the nation, and it has already forged partnerships with prestigious Indian hospitals and medical institutes for research. It also counts top physicians among its "professors of practice."

Students will be prepared for designing and creating life-saving medical gadgets, finding new drugs, using artificial intelligence in medicine, and conducting basic medical research.

"India's leadership in the fields of space, nuclear, digital, and biotechnology has shown our capacity and promise for research. The logical next step is to use this expertise in medicine. Co-founder Lashmi Narayanan of cognizant announced that the programming would debut on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) will be used to evaluate candidates for admission. Candidates must have earned a passing grade in science for their class 12 or an equivalent exam in 2022 or 2023 from a board recognised by India's Council of Boards of Department of Education.
