New Delhi: IIT Kanpur has launched a new Neuroscience project to improve research in the field. The Jay Pullur Neuroscience Initiative was launched on July 21, 2023 at a ceremony conducted at IIT Kanpur's Outreach Auditorium in memory of Jay Pullur, an alumni.
The initiative is being sponsored by an INR 5 crore endowment provided by Nirmala Jay Pullur, Jay Pullur's wife and a former student of the institution. Jay Pullur completed his MTech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1987.
Jay Pullur later founded Pramati Technologies, an IT company. The PK Kelkar Library's Jay Pullur Reading Room and Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Laboratory were also opened as part of the celebration.
Vijay Pullur, Jay Pullur's brother, and other family members were present for the event. The reading room will have new furnishings and technologies, and the lab's operations will centre on brain stimulation and mapping.
A portion of the endowment fund will also be utilised to start lecture series, give out scholarships to deserving students, and finance student research travel grants. This will increase the range of neuroscience researchers' interests and the educational opportunities available to them.
IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar said, “We started a groundbreaking path in neuroscience research at IIT Kanpur with the launch of the "Jay Pullur Neuroscience Initiative”.” This magnificent project, made possible by Nirmala Jay Pullur's kind donation, will not only advance our institution to the top of the area of science, but also pay tribute to the imprint our alumnus Jay Pullur left on the field of science and technology,” Nirmala Jay Pullur said.
“The progress that IIT Kanpur has made in the area of neurology is very positive. This project will advance Jay Pullur's goal of putting India on the map of top scientific and technology nations,” Nirmala Jay Pullur added.
