IIM Ahmedabad Likely to Become First IIM to Set Up Campus in UAE

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad may become the first IIM to make a foray abroad by setting up a campus in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Along with IIM Ahmedabad, three other IITs are also planning to establish overseas campuses.

As per government sources, the Education Ministry has already conducted a meeting to discuss the proposal of setting up a campus of IIM Ahmedabad abroad. This will be the first time when the central government is considering expanding India’s leading business schools overseas.

The proposal was developed after the UAE government first reached out to the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi with the idea. The source said, “Subsequently, Indian embassy officials conveyed the proposal to us. During discussions, it was felt that IIM-A was best placed to make the move”.

In addition to this, IIT Delhi is also considering opening its overseas campus in the United Arab Emirates. The campus is likely to be established by September 2024. While IIT Madras will be setting up an overseas campus in Tanzania and IIT Kharagpur will expand in Malaysia.

Informing about the update, IIM Ahmedabad officials said, “Some IIMs tied up with companies abroad in the past to offer general management programmes. But until now, there were no plans for IIMs to set up full-fledged campuses abroad”.

As of now, there are only two IIMs who are offering management programs to professionals abroad. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore offer the program in online mode and classes are held on weekends for all registered students.
