IIM Guwahati- India's 22nd IIM to Open in Assam; Admission to Begin this year

The Government of India has introduced India’s 22nd IIM in Guwahati. On August 19, 2025, the Parliament passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which enables the establishment of IIM Guwahati in Assam. This announcement comes a day after the IIM (Amendment) Bill 2025 was cleared by the Lok Sabha, which also highlighted the fact that from now on, IIM Guwahati will be granted the status of an ‘Institution of National Importance.

Initially, IIM Guwahati will operate from a temporary campus (provided by the Assam government). The new permanent campus is planned in Marabhita in Kamrup District (near Guwahati), Assam. Additionally, IIM Ahmedabad has been nominated as the Mentor Institute for the establishment of IIM Guwahati.

IIM Guwahati will commence its MBA admission process from this academic year. The institute is yet to announce details about its admission process and selection criteria. However, one can expect IIM Guwahati MBA admission to be similar to the IIM admission process. Students must note that CAT 2025 registration is ongoing. IIM Guwahati Granted National Importance Status

IIM Guwahati will be the second IIM in the northeast after IIM Shillong, established in 2007. According to the Indian Institute of Management Act 2017, all IIMs in India have been elevated to the status of institutions of national importance, allowing them to award degrees and function like full-fledged universities. Following the same, IIM Guwahati has also been declared as an Institute of National Importance.

The proposal for the establishment of IIM Guwahati was first made by Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2023. The confirmation was made after a formal letter was sent by the Joint Secretary (Ministry of Education) to the Director of IIM Ahmedabad on April 10, 2024. The letter addressed the establishment of IIM Guwahati at Marabhita in Kamrup District in Assam and proposed IIM Ahmedabad to mentor and oversee the new IIM.

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had called it a milestone achievement also stating that the National Education Policy 2020 will guide the teaching landscape of the new IIM. He also announced that IIM Guwahati will commence courses from the academic year 2026. Sarma adds, “It gives me great pleasure to share that the Hon'ble Minister has consented to our request of IIM-Guwahati to commence courses from the next academic year. We also discussed in detail the Government of India’s support for Assam under PM-USHA, a central scheme to finance state institutions.”

IIM Guwahati Admission 2026

Even though the establishment of a permanent campus of IIM Guwahati will take time, the admission process will start from this session. Although no official announcement has been made, it is expected that the selection process of IIM Guwahati will be similar to that of other IIMs. The CAT 2025 exam scores will be accepted for IIM Guwahati Admission 2026 for the first batch.

1. The admission will either be done through the CAP 2025 or the SAP 2025 process.
2. If the establishment and approval will take time, then the other pathway for admissions would be the opening of the Expression of Interest (EOI) window, particularly for IIM Guwahati. The candidates are advised to keep checking the EOI window in the months of March and April of 2026.

What is the EOI window?

After the shortlist for PI/WAT is released, some IIMs (like IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur) ask shortlisted candidates to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). The statement proves that the candidate is interested in further selection rounds. The shortlisted students will then have a separate CAP PI or WAT rounds conducted by individual IIMs.

NOTE: Candidates are advised to keep all the documents ready, including the CAT 2025 score card, academic and work experience details, declaration of interest, etc., to be prepared if the admission notification of IIM Guwahati is released.

Funding and Infrastructure of IIM Guwahati

The Union Cabinet has committed an investment of over Rs 500 Crores for the next five years. The initiative aims to enhance management education, foster entrepreneurship and promote economic growth in the region.

IIM Guwahati Location

IIM Guwahati will be the 2nd IIM in northeast India after IIM Shillong. The move to establish a new IIM in Assam will improve the development in the northeast. Initially, IIM Guwahati will operate from a temporary campus (provided by the Assam government) with a permanent home planned in Palasbari, Kamrup district. The exact location of IIM Guwahati is expected to be announced soon by the authorities.
