Recently, IIT Madras has introduced the ScOpE admission scheme, which allows students who have performed exceptionally in national or international Olympiads to gain entry to BTech programs at IITs. Science Olympiad Excellence (ScOpE) Admission is a new scheme introduced by IIT Madras that recognises and rewards students who have shown outstanding achievements in the national or international Olympiads. The ScOpE Admission Scheme is available to both Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO candidates. Students can now study at the IITs without JEE Advanced.
Following IIT Madras’s initiative, other IITs have also opened doors for students who want to study at IIT without JEE Advanced. For instance, IIT Kanpur admitted five students to its UG programs based on their Olympiad performance. Similarly, IIT Bombay and IIT Gandhinagar have admitted students who have performed well in the Olympiads.

How to Get Into IIT Without JEE Advanced: Ranking & Seat Allocation System
Students will get admitted to IIT without JEE Advanced based on the ScOpE Rank List. A candidate’s ranking will be determined through points, medals, or participation in training camps. However, there are certain variations in the ranking process across IITs:
- IIT Madras: IIT Madras applies a tiered point system based on the candidate’s performance in the eligible subject Olympiads specified by the department.
- IIT Kanpur: IIT Kanpur ranks the candidates based on their performance in the computer-based test conducted by the institution. The syllabus of the test is the same as that of JEE Advanced.
- IIT Bombay: Department of Mathematics conducts a written test and interview to determine a candidate’s admission under the ScOpE scheme.

How To Apply for IIT Without JEE Advanced?
The application process for SCOPE Admission is quite simple and straightforward. Students must meet all the eligibility criteria and prepare the necessary documents in advance. A candidate who meets the Science Olympiad Excellence (ScOpE) Admission criteria can read the following steps to know more about the admission process:
- Step 1: Register yourself through the ‘New User Registration’ icon on the official website. Create login credentials and fill in the required details, and select the Olympiad subjects you have participated in. This data cannot be changed later.
- Step 2: Upload all the required documents.
- Step 3: Choose and save your program preferences based on your eligibility. You can modify the order of preference before submission. However, once you have “Locked” the choices, they cannot be changed.
- Step 4: Pay the registration fee.
- Step 5: After payment, download the filled-in application form and save it for future reference.

IIT SCOPE Admission 2025 FAQs
Ques. Can I get admission to IIT without JEE?
Ans. Yes, some IITs offer UG programs where students don't need to qualify for JEE Advanced. For instance, IIT Madras offers online programs such as the BS in Data Science and BS in Electronic Systems, with admission through a qualifier test. IIT Madras also offers an offline BS program in Medical Sciences and Engineering, where admission to the course is based on the scores of the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). Top IITs, such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Roorkee, offer the B.Des program through the UCEED exam. In addition to these, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Bombay offer B.Tech programs without JEE Advanced. Students who have exceptional achievements in national and international Olympiads can now get into IIT through the ScOpE Admission Scheme. Ques. What will happen in case two candidates have the same score in the SCOPE Score Computation?
Ans. In case two candidates who are applying for the same program have the same score, tie-breakers will be used. Tie-breakers will be applied in the following order:
- Level 1: Candidates with the greater number of international gold medals will be ranked higher. If the score remains the same, Level 2 tie-breaking will be used.
- Level 2: Candidates with greater points in the Department’s subject-specific preference will be ranked higher. If the score remains the same, Level 3 tie-breaking will be used.
- Level 3: Candidate with the higher normalized Class 12 PCM marks will be ranked higher.
- In rare cases, an additional supernumerary seat will be formed to accommodate both candidates.
Ques. Do I apply for SCOPE Admission through the JoSAA portal?
Ans. No, students who want to apply through the SCOPE route will have to log in through a separate portal maintained by the IIT Madras. Students do not need to use the JoSAA portal for SCOPE Admission. SCOPE Admission and JoSAA applications are different and independent processes.
