Delhi University has announced its plans to provide approximately 20% of its courses through the online platform on the Swayam portal. This proposal will be discussed during the upcoming academic council meeting on November 30, 2023.

New Delhi: The University of Delhi is considering offering approximately 20% of its courses through the online platform on the Swayam portal. A proposal outlining this initiative is set to be presented to the academic council during its meeting on November 30, 2023.
As per the Delhi University proposal, the colleges may consider delivering a maximum of 20% of the total courses offered in a specific program during a semester through online mode. The intention is to complement the teaching-learning process within the institute, as outlined in the proposal.
However, Maya John, an assistant professor at Jesus Mary College, expects significant opposition from a majority of academic council members who believe that the emphasis on online learning will pose a threat to employment generation within the university.
Almost 90% of the academic council members are expected to oppose this proposal, viewing it as detrimental to both students and teachers.
The importance of classroom teaching, especially for students from diverse backgrounds, is highlighted, and concerns are raised about the potential impact on teaching staff who might be replaced by online learning on Swayam, stated Maya John, an assistant professor at Jesus Mary College Faculty.
Further, the proposal aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to achieve a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GRE) in higher education by 2035, utilizing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provided by the Swayam platform.
