Syed Sultan Ali is the Chairman of Aesthetic of Interiors Academy. He holds a diploma in Architecture with a postgraduation in interior design. Mr. Ali has been working in the industry for over a decade. He was a part of Eskay Ventures as an Interior Designer where he worked on designing residential houses like duplexes, independent houses, apartments and more. In 2003 he created his own venture and started the Aesthetic of Interiors Academy.

What motivated you to pursue a career in interior design education and become a Chairman of an interior design college?

My motivation to transition into interior design education likely stems from his desire to pass on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of interior designers. As the Managing Director, I have had the unique opportunity to shape the educational landscape and play a vital role in the industry's growth. This suggests a strong commitment to the development of future design professionals and a passion for advancing the field.


How do you envision the role of the Chairman at AIA? What is your leadership style?

I see the role of the Chairman as that of a visionary leader responsible for setting the strategic direction of the college. I use a collaborative and inclusive leadership style because I value input from all stakeholders. This approach encourages innovation and creates an environment where ideas are respected and considered, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among faculty, staff, and students.


What strategies do you employ to ensure the smooth functioning of the college and to maintain an environment that fosters creativity and innovation?

I emphasise open communication and continuous improvement as strategies to maintain smooth college functioning and promote creativity. This involves establishing channels for feedback and actively engaging all members of the college community. By encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and providing resources for research and experimentation, we foster an atmosphere where new ideas can thrive and where creative solutions can be explored.

How do you stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and industry developments in the field of interior design? How do you incorporate them into the college curriculum?

Staying updated in a dynamic field like interior design is vital. My team and I regularly engage in professional development, ensuring we remain current with industry trends and technologies. By maintaining strong industry connections and involving guest speakers and field visits, we expose students to real-world developments. Our annual curriculum updates reflect their commitment to integrating emerging trends and technologies into the learning experience.


How do you attract and retain highly qualified faculty members who can inspire and mentor students in their creative journey? How do you support their professional growth?

Attracting and retaining top-quality faculty is a priority for AIA. Competitive compensation and opportunities for professional development demonstrate the value placed on the faculty's expertise. We have created a mentorship culture where faculty members guide students. We also support research and publication, allowing faculty members to feel recognised and supported, which ultimately benefits the students.


In your opinion, what are the current challenges faced by interior design education? How do you address them?

The challenges we face are regarding keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology and promoting diversity and inclusivity. To address these, we actively integrate digital design tools into the curriculum, ensuring graduates are tech-savvy. Moreover, we also actively work to create an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and respected, fostering a diverse and vibrant learning community.


Can you share an example of a successful initiative or program you have implemented to enhance the overall student experience and outcomes in your previous role?

We have a mentorship program that pairs students with industry professionals, which significantly improves student networking and employment opportunities. This initiative has directly impacted student success by bridging the gap between academia and industry. To achieve this, we plan to focus on academic excellence, establish strong industry partnerships, and expand research capabilities. This vision reflects a commitment to adapt to industry needs while maintaining a strong emphasis on creativity and innovation, positioning the academy as a leading institution in the field.
