BITS Pilani's Goa campus is partnering with Goa University-affiliated colleges to mentor undergraduate students, helping them transition into PhD programs efficiently.

New Delhi: In a fresh collaboration, the BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa campus is set to mentor undergraduate students from Goa University-affiliated colleges, with the aim of accelerating their progression into PhD programs.
In return, Goa University will allow BITS Pilani to establish partnerships with its faculty for research projects aimed at addressing region-specific concerns in Goa, such as the biodiversity of the Western Ghats stretch.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has mandated the inclusion of a research component in higher education for all students. As per this policy, even undergraduate-level students are required to complete a dissertation as part of their curriculum.
Goa University's Vice-Chancellor, Harilal Menon, mentioned that if the Goa University-affiliated colleges have exceptionally talented and research-oriented students, they can be expedited into PhD programs without the typical formal procedures.
Suman Kundu, Director of BITS Pilani Goa, added that when students from GU-affiliated colleges engage in research at their institute, teachers from both institutions will collaborate in co-mentoring the research students.
He mentioned that this collaboration might motivate the co-mentoring faculty to pursue their PhDs at BITS in Goa because of their active involvement.
Kundu stated that this partnership will foster a research-friendly environment, and we already have a part-time PhD program in place at BITS Pilani's Goa campus
He also shared that there are plans outlined in the MoU to enable students from his institute, who have successfully submitted their PhD theses, to participate as guest lecturers in Goa University programs.
They can get some training and experience in teaching at the Goa University and find out if they are meant for teaching. This model has worked well in the past, Kundu said
They will receive training and valuable teaching experience at Goa University to explore their suitability for teaching. This approach has proven effective in previous instances, Kundu expressed.
Additionally, there will be collaborative workshops, conferences, and joint projects initiated by faculty members from both Goa University and BITS Pilani.
The MoU will enable the university to expand their research and academic initiatives in the future. Goa University has a bio-incubator, and faculty members from BITS Pilani can also access and utilize their facilities. In the future, they can explore the possibility of a sandwich model for the students, allowing them to split their programs between GU and BITS Pilani, Goa, Menon suggested.
Kundu highlighted that the MoU is a part of a broader vision where all higher education institutions in Goa collaborate. In the future, this collaboration might extend to include institutions like IIT Goa and NIT Goa.
The ultimate goal is to retain talented individuals in Goa and prevent a brain drain, ensuring that students can pursue research and academic opportunities within the state without needing to go elsewhere.
