AIIMS Guwahati’s First Trial for Health Service Drone Successful

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati has made history by launching its first trial drone operation for health services on February 20, 2024. The trial was overseen by AIIMS Guwahati’s Executive Director, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik. 

The health services drone operation has also received support from the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, and the office of Kamrup Rural, the Joint Director of Health Services, Kamrup Rural.

The use of drone technology for health and wellness services plays a crucial role in the development of India’s health sector. Drones can traverse difficult terrain and operate across various weather conditions. Part of the trial by AIIMS Guwahati includes reaching out to riverine Char primary healthcare centers (PHCs), including centers such as Bongalpara Char PHC, Goroimari CHC, and Batahidia Char PHC.

The drone launched is capable of carrying medical goods and necessities over considerable distances. It can even cart back samples for testing and analysis to AIIMS, as reported on the AIIMS Guwahati Twitter handle. This is particularly helpful during emergencies.

PM Modi’s speech at the AIIMS Jammu inauguration touched upon the development of Jammu and Kashmir regions in the past ten years. AIIMS Jammu will present new opportunities to local medical aspirants and those in need of specialized healthcare.

PM Modi said, “The Union Government has added 15 new AIIMS in the last 10 years, including two in J&K alone.” He also added that “[the] people of Jammu will no longer have to leave for Delhi to avail specialized medical treatment, which will help them save valuable time and resources.”
