Ireland's education regulator named India its top student source on November 17, 2025. Indian master's applicants now weigh Ireland against a shorter UK work visa. The Higher Education Authority (HEA) puts India at 20.6% of 44,535 international enrolments. Three years earlier, the US led and India ranked second.
- India's share works out to 9,174 students in 2024/25, per HEA Key Facts and Figures.
- The UK cuts its Graduate Route to 18 months from January 1, 2027.
- Ireland still offers master's graduates up to 24 months of post-study work.
The shift comes as Indian students rethink the big English-speaking destinations. Visa costs, work rights and language now drive the choice.

HEA Data Puts India Top of Ireland's International Intake
India overtook the US to lead Ireland's international enrolment. The HEA's 2022/23 release had the US first at 14.5%. India sat second at 13.5% that year.
| Metric (HEA) | 2022/23 | 2024/25 |
|---|---|---|
| International enrolments | 35,140 | 44,535 |
| India's share | 13.5% | 20.6% |
| US share | 14.5% | 13.8% |
| China's share | 11.3% | 9.9% |
International enrolment rose 10.2% in 2024/25 alone. Non-EU students made up 32,940 of those enrolments. Indian households now drive a fifth of Ireland's foreign intake. India's own data shows the same pull. MEA data tabled in the Rajya Sabha backs this up. Indian students in Ireland grew 49% from 2022 to 2024.
UK Cuts Graduate Route to 18 Months From 2027
The UK Home Office confirmed the cut in its October 2025 rules update. Bachelor's and master's graduates applying from January 1, 2027 get 18 months. Earlier applicants keep the current two years. PhD graduates still get three years.
| Post-study work for master's graduates | UK Graduate Route | Ireland Stamp 1G |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 18 months (from Jan 1, 2027) | Up to 24 months |
| How it is granted | One grant | Two blocks of 12 months |
| Bachelor's graduates | 18 months | 12 months |
Ireland's Stamp 1G immigration permission covers graduates seeking work. Irish Immigration Service Delivery sets these durations.
Important Distinction: The UK rule follows your visa application date. Your graduation date does not decide it. A September 2026 UK master's student will likely apply in 2027. That student gets 18 months, not two years.
UK entry money also stays high. UKVI requires £1,529 a month for London study. That equals ₹1.94 lakh a month at ₹127.04 per GBP (October 2026). Over nine months, the total reaches £13,761, or ₹17.48 lakh.

Why Indians Pick Ireland Over Germany and Europe
Ireland competes with continental Europe on a different axis. Its degrees run fully in English. Most German public courses cost less but often need German.
Germany grew faster on India's own numbers. MEA data shows Indian students in Germany rose 68% over the same period. Germany also demands a blocked account of €11,904 a year. That is ₹12.89 lakh at ₹108.32 per EUR (October 2026).
- Language: Ireland teaches in English across all programmes.
- Degree level: Level 9 master's unlock the longer Stamp 1G.
- Work rights: Stamp 1G allows full-time work while job hunting.

Key Caveat: Ireland's 24 months is not automatic. The second 12 months depends on conditions. Graduates must show real steps toward graduate-level work.
Taught Master's and Tech Drive Demand in Ireland
Taught master's enrolments rose 9.8% to 34,235 in 2024/25. This is the route most Indian applicants take.
| Indicator (HEA) | Figure |
|---|---|
| International graduates in Business, Administration and Law | 27.7% |
| International graduates in ICT | 18.3% |
| Non-EU graduates, Class of 2024 | 12,115 (up 11.5%) |
| Top host: UCD | 7,985 international students |
| Second host: Trinity College Dublin | 6,945 international students |
ICT here means information and communication technology courses. Shortlists can start with the top universities in Ireland.
Key Insight: Ireland's rise is a share story, not a scale story. The UK took "almost 95,000 entrants" from India in 2024/25. That count comes from the House of Commons Library. Ireland's total Indian enrolment is under a tenth of that.
How Should Indian Students Plan an Irish Intake for 2027?
Most Indian students target the September intake. Course choice is widest then. January intakes exist but cover fewer programmes. Budget early for rent and tuition. The Cost of Studying in Ireland breakdown covers tuition and rent. Deadlines by university sit under Intakes in Ireland.
Ireland's appeal now rests on one gap. The UK work window shrinks on January 1, 2027. Ireland's 24-month window for master's graduates stays. Indian applicants for September 2027 should compare both before paying any deposit.
- Confirm your course is a Level 9 master's for full Stamp 1G.
- Shortlist three Irish and two UK universities.
- Apply to Irish universities for September 2027 early.
- Arrange housing before you book flights.
