Technical University of Munich's Master of Science in Civil Engineering is a 2-year (4-semester) full-time program based at TUM's Main Campus in Munich. TUM ranks #37 globally in Civil and Structural Engineering in the QS Subject Rankings 2026 — the #1 ranked Civil Engineering program in Germany. The program offers 22 areas of specialisation spanning structural engineering, geotechnics, sustainable construction, transportation systems, hydraulic engineering and more — one of the broadest civil engineering curricula in Europe.

For Indian students, tuition is €6,000/semester (~₹6.54 Lakhs), totalling €24,000 (~₹26.16 Lakhs) over 4 semesters. Living costs in Munich add €900–€1,200/month (~₹98,100–₹1.31 Lakhs). Germany's student visa allows part-time work up to 20 hours/week during semesters. Entry-level civil engineering graduates in Germany earn €40,000–€55,000/year (~₹43.6–60 Lakhs).

Current Admission Status: The Winter Semester 2026/27 application window is open from April 1 to May 31, 2026 (IST deadline: May 31, 2026, 11:59 PM IST). Indian applicants must obtain an APS certificate and uni-assist VPD — both require early action as processing can take 4–6 weeks.

FAQs

Ques. Is GRE or GATE required for Indian students applying to TUM MSc Civil Engineering?

Ans. Unlike TUM's Automotive Engineering program, the MSc Civil Engineering does not have a blanket GRE/GATE requirement for Indian students. TUM's official program page states that additional documents such as GRE or GATE "may be required depending on educational background and country of origin" — but this is assessed case-by-case after the online application is submitted. Indian applicants from IITs or NITs with strong academic records typically do not face a GRE requirement for Civil Engineering. The APS certificate is mandatory for all Indian applicants regardless of institution. Confirm your specific requirements by completing the TUMonline application, which generates a personalised document checklist.

Ques. Can Indian students complete TUM MSc Civil Engineering entirely in English without knowing German?

Ans. Yes — partially. TUM officially confirms that 10 of the 22 specialisations are taught entirely in English, including Structural Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Hydromechanics, Computational Modelling and Simulation, Engineering Risk and Reliability and Traffic Control and Transport Planning. Students who choose 4 specialisations from this English-taught list can complete the entire degree in English. However, German proficiency significantly expands your specialisation choices and improves part-time job prospects in Munich. TUM's Language Center offers German courses for enrolled students. For the visa application, no German language proof is required.

Ques. What is the aptitude assessment scoring system for TUM MSc Civil Engineering and how can Indian students maximise their score?

Ans. The aptitude assessment awards a maximum of 100 points: 60 points for subject coverage in your Bachelor's (how well your coursework covers Higher Mathematics, Engineering Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Building Construction, Construction Management and Building Physics), 20 points for your Bachelor's average grade and 20 points for your CV and statement of purpose. Scoring 80 or above guarantees direct admission without an interview. Indian students from Civil Engineering programs at IITs, NITs or reputed state universities typically score well on subject coverage. A strong statement of purpose (max. 2 pages) explaining specific motivation for TUM's Civil Engineering program and highlighting relevant projects or research can be the deciding factor for borderline applicants in the 70–79 range.
