The undergraduate degree offers the opportunity to acquire in-depth basic knowledge oriented towards current research questions. The focus is on the secure mastery of science-oriented subject content and the aim is to encourage students to do independent research and communication work on the basis of art-scientific methods. In addition to gaining in-depth knowledge of the history, reception, and aesthetics of art from modern times to the present, its techniques, genres, and media, the focus of the course are on an expanded repertoire of visual culture. It is intended to build up and deepen competencies in image and media theory and includes image media such as photography, film and television, design-cultural artifacts, etc.
Cultural studies, Art-sociological, and art-pedagogical focal points also provide the necessary qualifications for project-oriented engagement with reflected forms of application and communication of the subject. Consecutive studies as part of the Master’s degree in Art and Design Science or another subsequent Master’s degree can also be taken after the BA degree in Art Studies. Professionally relevant key qualifications, which aim to enable interdisciplinary exchange and to open up the training of students to other professional fields, are essential. There are no tuition fees at the University of Duisburg-Essen. All students are, however, subject to a student body and social contribution fee per semester.
The social and student body contribution for the summer and winter semesters 2021 amounts to a total of $774.86.
The amount is made up as follows:
- Mobility contribution (ticket): $506.82, of which $367.88 for the VRR semester ticket and $138.94 for the NRW ticket
- Social contribution for the Studierendenwerk: $229.96
- Student body fee: $38.08.
The social and student body contribution is not to be paid before enrollment! Students will be informed about the payment modalities upon registration.
