University of Cologne Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Cologne runs two intakes: Winter Semester (starts in October, applications open on 2 June) and Summer Semester (starts in April, applications open on 1 December).

• The Winter Semester is the primary intake for Indian applicants — the vast majority of English-taught master's programs, all bachelor programs, and all restricted subjects (Medicine, Law, Psychology) admit here only. Dates below are per the official master applicants page.

University of Cologne Eligibility for Indian Students

Cologne treats Indian qualifications as partially recognised for undergraduate entry, which is a specific German rule most Indian applicants underestimate. A stand-alone Indian Class XII is not enough for direct bachelor admission — you also need one year of completed Indian undergraduate study for most subjects, or a passed Feststellungsprüfung, or Studienkolleg completion. Master’s entry works on a straightforward related-degree basis. 

• UG general entry (recommended): Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or state board) at 65% or higher, plus one completed year of an Indian bachelor’s degree in the same subject family
• PG general entry (recommended): A Bachelor’s degree of at least three years with a minimum of 60% (roughly a German 2.5 GPA), in a subject related to your chosen master's
• WiSo Faculty PG: Bachelor’s in Business, Economics, or Management with at least 60%; some programmes run a supplementary PACO score self-assessment
• English-taught PG programmes: English requirements also vary by programme. For example, some programmes accept IELTS 5.5 / TOEFL iBT 72 at B2 level, while others require IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL iBT 95 at C1 level.
• German proof (German-taught programs): TestDaF 4x4, DSH 2, Goethe C1, or telc C1 Hochschule
• APS certificate: Mandatory for every Indian applicant, issued by the German Embassy Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi

Insider note: Indian applicants also need an APS certificate (Academic Evaluation Centre) issued in New Delhi, which itself takes 3 to 4 weeks. Start this before the VPD, since the APS is a required input for uni-assist to process your file.

Cologne University Bachelor’s Programs for Indian Students

Undergraduate teaching at Cologne is overwhelmingly in German. There are almost no fully English-taught bachelor programs, so Indian applicants targeting UG must plan for German proficiency at TestDaF 4x4 or DSH 2 level before applying, plus the one-year Indian UG bridge described in the Eligibility section. 

UoC Application Process via uni-assist

Every Indian applicant to a bachelor or master program goes through the same two-stage route. Stage one produces the VPD (Preliminary Review Documentation) from uni-assist, which formally recognises your Indian qualifications for German admission. 1. Register on uni-assist and upload documents. The application platform for the Winter Semester 2026/27 opened on 2 June 2026, and non-restricted / English-taught programs close on 1 September 2026. Pay the application fee of EUR 75 (around INR 8,363) for your first program to uni-assist.
2. Submit VPD documents at least six weeks before your program deadline. uni-assist processing takes six to eight weeks; late submission is the single biggest reason Indian applications miss the KLIPS deadline.
3. Obtain your APS certificate from the German Embassy Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi. Allow three to four weeks and factor in its 25 USD fee (around INR 2,092) separately.
4. Receive the VPD and create a KLIPS 2.0 account at klips2.uni-koeln.de. The VPD number goes into your KLIPS profile as proof of qualification recognition.
5. Submit the program-specific application on KLIPS. Upload the SOP, transcripts, English test score, and any program-specific attachments such as a PACO score screenshot for WiSo master's.
6. Wait for the admission decision. Cologne typically issues offers three to six weeks after the KLIPS deadline. Accept via KLIPS and download the admission letter for your visa.

Each additional program you apply to in the same term through uni-assist costs EUR 30 (around INR 3,345). Cologne does not charge a separate handling fee on KLIPS.

Once your KLIPS application closes, Cologne moves through a compressed decision cycle. Below is what to expect between offer and enrolment for a Winter Semester intake.

• Deferral policy: deferral to the next semester is allowed on a program-by-program basis with faculty approval; not automatic
