University of Cologne offers 15+ scholarships, of which 10+ are accessible to Indian applicants. Awards range from EUR 300 per month (INR 33,207) to fully funded PhD contracts worth INR 36.53 Lakhs per year.

The university charges zero tuition for public programs, so scholarships here cover living costs, not fees. Most Indian students stack a monthly award with the standard semester fee of INR 33,733.

  • Standard tuition (public programs): EUR 0 (INR 0). Semester fee EUR 304.75 (INR 33,733) applies.
  • With semester-fee waiver: No blanket waiver exists. Sozialstipendium recipients still pay the semester fee.
  • With scholarship plus fee combo: Deutschlandstipendium (EUR 300 per month) offsets EUR 3,600 (INR 3.98 Lakhs) of yearly living cost.
  • Next actionable deadline: DAAD Study Scholarship for Graduates, tentative October 31, 2026.

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 EUR = INR 110.69 as of September 2026. Amounts above INR 1 Lakh use Lakhs; smaller figures use raw INR.

University of Cologne Scholarships for UG Students

Bachelor’s applicants can pursue 4 university-run awards, most paying EUR 300 per month (INR 33,207) for two semesters minimum. All require prior enrolment, so plan them as top-ups after admission.

ScholarshipAmount (EUR / INR)DurationEligibilityDeadline (2027 cycle, tentative)

SozialstipendiumEUR 300/month (INR 33,207)2 semestersDocumented financial need under Germany’s federal student aid income rules, good academic performance. 16 awarded in winter 2025/26.Same portal window, August 2027
InklusionsstipendiumEUR 300/month (INR 33,207)2 semestersEnrolled students with documented disability or chronic illness affecting studies. 10 awarded in winter 2025/26.Combined cycle, August 2027
Talentscouting Meets Social ScholarshipEUR 300/month (INR 33,207)2 semestersAlumni of Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia Talentscouting programme, first-generation students, financial need. 2 awarded in winter 2025/26.Annual round, August 2027

Sozialstipendium is the quiet-win option. Only 16 slots but very few international applicants, so a strong need-plus-merit file often beats the odds.

Reddit Insight: Indian r/germany users report the Talentscouting scholarship is effectively closed to applicants outside North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Bachelor’s applicants should focus on Deutschlandstipendium and Sozialstipendium instead.

Bachelor programs at Cologne are almost entirely taught in German, so most Indian UG applicants need TestDaF 4 or DSH-2 first. Check the University of Cologne Admissions page for language proof rules.

University of Cologne Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s applicants unlock 5 higher-value awards, mostly through DAAD partnerships. A Cologne Master’s student can stack DAAD (EUR 992 per month) with Deutschlandstipendium (EUR 300 per month), reaching INR 17.16 Lakhs per year.

Reddit Insight: Indian Master’s applicants in r/germany flag DAAD Study Scholarship success from India around 8 percent. Most treat Deutschlandstipendium as their post-enrolment backup.

The University of Cologne Programs list shows which Master’s tracks fit DAAD EPOS eligibility, since only development-relevant fields qualify.

Only Inlaks pays outright grant funds. The others are low-interest loans, so read repayment clauses before accepting.

Stacking rules matter here. Inlaks bars parallel scholarships above USD 8,000 per year, while DAAD forbids combining with another full stipend. Confirm with each foundation before you accept.

University of Cologne PhD Scholarships

Cologne funds 4 doctoral tracks through salaried research contracts, not stipends alone. A TV-L E13 65 percent contract (Germany’s public-sector academic pay grade at part-time rate) pays roughly EUR 2,750 gross per month. That totals INR 3.04 Lakhs monthly, or INR 36.53 Lakhs per year.

Indian PhD applicants usually split effort across three routes:

  • DAAD Research Grant for guaranteed portable funding tied to a research proposal.
  • Direct supervisor pitch for a DFG project contract with higher take-home pay.
  • CGSAR or Bonn-Cologne graduate school for structured cohort admission and mentoring.

External Government Scholarships for University of Cologne Applicants

5 German federal and EU-level programs sit outside Cologne’s in-house awards. Three of them are non-negotiable to know about before you apply.

Heinrich Boell StiftungEUR 934/month (INR 1.03 Lakhs) plus mobility supplementsMaster’s, PhDIndian nationals with strong academic record, activism or ecological engagement, admit at Cologne.March 1 and September 1, 2027

Reddit Insight: Indian users repeatedly note that Germany’s political foundations (KAS, FES, Boell) reject applicants without a demonstrated civic-society track record. Token volunteering rarely gets through.

Living costs at Cologne run about EUR 10,124 (INR 11.21 Lakhs) per year. A single EUR 934 monthly award therefore covers close to 90 percent of that outlay.

University of Cologne Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian student at Cologne can realistically build?

Ans. An Indian PhD candidate on a TV-L E13 100 percent contract plus a DAAD travel grant reaches around INR 55 Lakhs per year. At Master’s level, DAAD (EUR 992 per month) plus Deutschlandstipendium (EUR 300 per month) reaches INR 17.16 Lakhs per year. Bachelor’s caps out at Deutschlandstipendium alone, since it does not stack with Sozialstipendium, so INR 3.98 Lakhs per year.

Ques. When should Indian applicants submit scholarship files for the September 2027 intake at Cologne?

Ans. Send DAAD Study Scholarship files by October 31, 2026 for the following September start. Inlaks Shivdasani closes April 8, 2027, and Deutschlandstipendium opens only after enrolment, tentatively August 2027. Miss those windows and the funding gap can force a semester delay.

Ques. How do you apply for the Deutschlandstipendium at Cologne, before or after admission?

Ans. Only after enrolment. Applications open on the Cologne funding portal each August, and students upload matriculation proof, transcript, CV and one motivation letter. Selection lands in November, with EUR 300 monthly payouts starting December of the same semester.

Ques. What CGPA does Cologne expect for a competitive DAAD Study Scholarship shortlist?

Ans. DAAD India benchmarks 8.5 out of 10 for Master’s applicants, and 9.0 or higher is competitive at Cologne. Applicants below 8.0 rarely clear the DAAD internal review. GATE 90th percentile or GRE 320 plus adds weight for engineering and economics applicants.

Ques. Does the Deutschlandstipendium at EUR 300 per month cover rent in Cologne city?

Ans. Not on its own. Cologne average student rent runs EUR 450 to 550 per month, so Deutschlandstipendium alone falls short by roughly EUR 150 to 250. Most Indian recipients pair it with a werkstudent (Germany’s student-worker) contract, up to 20 hours per week at EUR 12.82 minimum wage.

Ques. Are DAAD EPOS scholarships available for Master’s programs at University of Cologne?

Ans. Only for select development-relevant courses. Cologne’s WiSo Faculty runs Economic Research and Public Policy tracks that qualify, but pure computer science, law and humanities Master’s do not. Indian applicants need two years of professional experience linked to development, plus TestDaF 4 or IELTS 6.5.

My university has one of the most renowned programs in anthropology and ethnography. It enrolls more than 5000 international students annually. It boasts of an intercultural environment that I found attractive. Enrolling in my particular programs is based on good references and above-average grades in your previous educational qualification. I did not pay any application fee and it was the only university I applied to in Germany. After enrolment, I was informed that I was selected on the basis that there was a project that was being started in the area studies program that I was well experienced in.
