This degree program is unique because one can acquire the competence to grasp, understand and assess historical contexts, especially at the RUB, first with the cross-epoch IPS and later with self-chosen focuses based on many specialization options
This course offers a specialization in the areas:
- of the ancient, medieval, and modern epochs
- regional focus (e.g. Eastern Europe, North America, Turkey)
- systematic focus (e.g. economic history, gender history)
- practical elements
- History of the Ruhr Area / Social Movements (ISB)
- the interdisciplinary and international orientation

Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) does not charge tuition fees. The students must only pay a semester contribution fee of about $401 per semester. This fee includes free use of public transport in North-Rhine Westphalia, and reduced prices for food and beverages in the cafeteria (Mensa) and canteens.
