- The environment is characterized by complex systems such as ecosystems (forest), human-environment systems (city), economic systems (companies) or transport systems (rail). Knowledge of the properties of individual system components does not indicate the behavior of the overall system.
- Systems scientists use a wide range of methods to analyze the relationships within complex systems with the aim of explaining their behavior and controlling their development. Mathematical and computer-based models are important tools.
- The "Applied Systems Science" course in Osnabrück is unique in Germany. It is made up of the disciplines of systems science, mathematics, computer science, and an application subject. Biology, chemistry, physics, economics, social sciences, geography/geoinformatics or psychology can be chosen as the application subject.
