NIET B.Tech (Lateral) Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Biotechnology (regular) and B.Tech Biotechnology (Lateral Entry) at NIET?
Ans. The regular B.Tech Biotechnology is a 4-year programme starting from the first year, open to 10+2 students with PCM/PCB. The lateral entry programme is a 3-year programme where students enter directly into the second year (3rd semester), skipping the first year. It is open to diploma holders in Engineering (Biotechnology or related branch) and B.Sc. graduates. The curriculum from the 2nd year onwards is identical for both regular and lateral entry students. The lateral entry route saves one year and has a lower total fee (INR 4,02,300 vs INR 6,46,200 for regular).
Ques. Can B.Sc. Biology or B.Sc. Biotechnology graduates apply for lateral entry B.Tech Biotechnology at NIET?
Ans. Yes, B.Sc. graduates with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology as subjects from a recognised university with minimum 45% marks are eligible for lateral entry B.Tech admission through UPTAC counselling. However, the specific subject combination accepted may vary, and candidates should verify their eligibility with NIET's admissions office and the UPTAC information brochure before applying. B.Sc. Biotechnology graduates are generally considered eligible given the subject alignment with the programme.
Ques. What is the total fee for B.Tech Lateral Entry Biotechnology at NIET and how does it compare to the regular programme?
Ans. The total fee for the 3-year lateral entry programme is INR 4,02,300 (Year 1: INR 1,48,500; Year 2 and Year 3: INR 1,26,900 each). This is significantly lower than the regular 4-year B.Tech Biotechnology total fee of INR 6,46,200. The lateral entry fee structure also has a lower tuition fee (INR 95,900 vs INR 1,03,100 per year) and lower recurring charges, making it a more economical option for eligible diploma holders and B.Sc. graduates.
Ques. Is the B.Tech degree awarded to lateral entry students the same as the regular B.Tech degree from NIET/AKTU?
Ans. Yes, the degree awarded to lateral entry students upon successful completion of the 3-year programme is the same B.Tech in Biotechnology degree from AKTU, Lucknow. There is no distinction on the degree certificate between regular and lateral entry students. The degree is recognised by AICTE and is equivalent to the regular B.Tech degree for all purposes including employment, higher education (M.Tech/MBA), and government job applications.
Ques. How many seats are available for B.Tech Lateral Entry Biotechnology at NIET?
Ans. As per AICTE and AKTU norms, lateral entry seats are typically 10% of the approved intake of the regular programme. Since the regular B.Tech Biotechnology at NIET has an intake of 60 seats, the lateral entry intake is approximately 6 seats. These seats are filled through UPTAC lateral entry counselling (85%) and direct admission (15%). Due to the small number of seats, early registration for UPTAC counselling is strongly advisable.
Ques. What career options are available after completing B.Tech Lateral Entry Biotechnology from NIET?
Ans. Graduates of B.Tech Biotechnology (Lateral Entry) from NIET have the same career opportunities as regular B.Tech Biotechnology graduates. Career paths include roles in the pharmaceutical industry (research associate, quality control analyst), bioprocess and fermentation industry, food and beverages sector, vaccine technology companies, biochemical industries, and bioinformatics/IT. Graduates can also pursue M.Tech in Biotechnology (NIET offers this programme), MBA in Pharma/Healthcare Management, or research positions. The average package for NIET graduates is around 6 LPA.
