NSoMASA Ph.D. (Statistics) FAQs
Ques. I have a valid GATE score in Statistics. Do I still need to appear for the NMIMS Entrance Test for Ph.D. (Statistics)?
Ans. No, candidates with a valid GATE score are exempted from the NMIMS Entrance Test for the Ph.D. (Statistics) programme. However, exemption from the written test does not mean exemption from the entire selection process. You are still required to appear for the Personal Interview at the Mumbai campus, which carries 30% weightage in the final merit list. Make sure your GATE score is within the valid period at the time of application. Similarly, candidates with valid UGC-NET (including JRF), UGC-CSIR NET, SET, or SLET qualifications are also exempted from the written test but must attend the Personal Interview.
Ques. What is the actual amount I will pay per year for the Ph.D. (Statistics) at NMIMS after the scholarship?
Ans. The gross annual tuition fee is Rs. 2,50,000. NMIMS provides an assured scholarship of Rs. 2,00,000 per annum to all admitted Ph.D. students, which brings the effective annual fee down to just Rs. 50,000. This scholarship is available for up to 5 years or until the completion of the programme, whichever is earlier. Over the minimum programme duration of 3 years, the total net payable amount (after scholarship) is Rs. 1,50,000. Additionally, if you qualify as a JRF holder, you are eligible for the UGC JRF Fellowship of approximately Rs. 49,490 per month, which can further offset your living and research expenses.
Ques. Is the Ph.D. (Statistics) at NMIMS NSoMASA available in part-time mode for working professionals?
Ans. No. The Ph.D. in Statistics at NMIMS NSoMASA (course_id 3861) is offered only in Full Time mode. Students are required to be present on campus regularly and engage in full-time research. NMIMS does separately offer a Ph.D. in Statistics in Part Time mode (a different course listing), which is designed for working professionals employed in research organizations, academic institutions, or industry, and requires submission of an NOC from the employer. If you are a working professional, you should check the Part Time variant and its specific eligibility requirements.
Ques. What are the research areas available under the Ph.D. (Statistics) programme at NMIMS, and how is a research guide assigned?
Ans. The Ph.D. in Statistics at NSoMASA covers a broad range of research areas including Statistical Inference, Advanced Statistical Analysis, Reliability Theory, Applied Probability, Time Series Data Analysis, Multivariate Data Analysis, Operations Research, Actuarial Science, Stochastic Processes, Business Analytics, Decision Science, Quantitative Techniques, and Parametric and Non-parametric Inference. The specific research area is finalized in consultation with the faculty guide after admission. Candidates are expected to mention their preferred area of research in the Statement of Purpose (SOP) at the time of application, and the Personal Interview also involves a discussion on research interests to help match candidates with appropriate guides.
Ques. What is the structure of the NMIMS Entrance Test for Ph.D. (Statistics), and what topics should I prepare?
Ans. The NMIMS Entrance Test is 90 minutes long and carries 100 marks. It is divided into two sections: Section A (50 marks) is common to all Ph.D. programmes and covers Aptitude-based MCQs in Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language. Section B (50 marks) is domain-specific for Statistics and covers Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, Distribution Theory, Statistical Inference, and Estimation Theory. Candidates must score at least 50% in the Entrance Test to qualify for the Personal Interview. The test is conducted at the Mumbai campus only, and there is no provision for online or remote examination.
Ques. I completed my Master's in Applied Statistics from a state university. Am I eligible for the Ph.D. (Statistics) at NMIMS NSoMASA?
Ans. Yes, candidates with a Master's degree in Applied Statistics (in addition to Statistics) are explicitly eligible for the Ph.D. in Statistics at NMIMS NSoMASA, provided they have secured at least 55% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale). Candidates who have obtained their degree through part-time, distance learning, or correspondence courses from a recognized university are also eligible to apply as per UGC guidelines. If your degree is from a foreign institution, you will need to provide an AIU certificate of equivalence. It is advisable to verify your eligibility directly with NSoMASA before applying, as the admission handout is the sole document for eligibility determination.
