SoMASA B.Sc Applied Statistics FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) and B.Sc. (Data Science) at NMIMS NSoMASA?
Ans. Both programmes share a common foundation in the first two semesters and are offered at the same campus. The B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) focuses on classical and applied statistics, probability theory, sampling, regression, actuarial science, and domain-specific analytics including Marketing Analytics, Financial Risk Analytics, and Healthcare Analytics. The B.Sc. (Data Science) focuses more on machine learning, deep learning, big data systems, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Students interested in a career in statistical modelling, actuarial science, or financial analytics should prefer Applied Statistics, while those interested in machine learning and software-driven data science should consider Data Science.
Ques. Is Mathematics mandatory in 10+2 for admission to B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) at NMIMS?
Ans. Yes, Mathematics and/or Statistics must be one of the subjects in 10+2 for eligibility. The minimum aggregate required is 50% in 10+2. The NMIMS-MST (Mathematical Science Test) is the entrance exam, which tests Quantitative Reasoning (60 questions), Logical Reasoning (40 questions), and Verbal Reasoning (20 questions) in a 100-minute computer-based test. There is no negative marking. Candidates can attempt the test up to 3 times, and the highest score is considered.
Ques. Can I exit the B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) programme after 3 years instead of completing 4 years?
Ans. Yes. Under the NEP 2020 framework, students have multiple exit options: after Year 1 (Foundation Certificate), Year 2 (Diploma), Year 3 (B.Sc. degree), or Year 4 (B.Sc. Hons. degree with a research/multi-disciplinary focus). Students who exit after 3 years receive a B.Sc. degree but are not eligible for the Hons. degree. Students interested in the 4-year Hons. degree must indicate their preference at the end of the 2nd year. The 4th year has a research/multi-disciplinary focus and is particularly useful for students planning to pursue higher studies or research careers.
Ques. What software tools are taught in the B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) programme at NMIMS?
Ans. The programme provides hands-on training in a wide range of industry-standard tools including Python, R Studio, Tableau, Power BI, SQL, Oracle, SAS Visual Analytics, MATLAB, Excel, Hadoop, TensorFlow, SPSS, AWS, Google Analytics, Jupyter Notebooks, and Git. This extensive software training ensures that graduates are technically proficient and job-ready across multiple analytics platforms. The curriculum is regularly updated in consultation with the Board of Studies, which includes experts from academia, research institutions, and industry.
Ques. What career options are available after B.Sc. (Applied Statistics and Analytics) from NMIMS NSoMASA?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as Data Analysts, Statistical Analysts, Quantitative Analysts, Financial Research Analysts, Actuarial Analysts, Risk Analysts, and Product Managers at companies like Deloitte, ZS Associates, D.E. Shaw, Amazon India, Accenture, and Capgemini. The highest placement package recorded is Rs. 22 LPA and the average is Rs. 6 LPA. Many graduates also pursue higher studies such as M.Sc. in Statistics, Data Science, or MBA programmes in India or abroad. The programme's strong foundation in both theory and applied analytics makes graduates versatile across multiple industries.
Ques. How many times can I attempt the NMIMS-MST, and does a higher score in a retake replace the earlier score?
Ans. You can attempt the NMIMS-MST a maximum of 3 times: 1 main attempt and 2 retakes. The highest score among all your attempts is considered for the merit list, so retaking the exam can only improve your chances. Each attempt (including retakes) costs Rs. 2,000 per school selected. Once the main exam is delivered, you cannot add a new school in the same category for a retake, but you can add a new test category. Rescheduling or cancellation of a scheduled exam is not allowed, so plan your test date carefully.
