SoMASA B.Sc FAQs
Ques. Is the B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing at NMIMS NSoMASA a 3-year or 4-year programme, and what is the difference?
Ans. The programme is structured as a 4-year degree under NEP 2020 guidelines. However, students have the option to exit after completing 3 years and receive a standard B.Sc. degree. Those who wish to pursue the 4-year Honours degree must indicate their preference at the end of Year 2. The 4th year focuses on research and multidisciplinary courses, and successful completion leads to a B.Sc. Honours degree. Students who exit after 3 years are not eligible for the Honours designation.
Ques. What is the NMIMS-MST exam, and how is it different from NMIMS-NPAT?
Ans. NMIMS-MST (Mathematical Science Test) is a separate university-level entrance exam specifically for admission to the three B.Sc. programmes at NSoMASA (Applied Mathematical Computing, Applied Statistics & Analytics, and Data Science). It is different from NMIMS-NPAT, which is used for commerce, economics, and liberal arts programmes. The MST tests Quantitative Reasoning (60 marks), Logical Reasoning (40 marks), and Verbal Reasoning (20 marks) for a total of 120 marks in 100 minutes. Admission to B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing can also be considered based on SAT/ACT or NMIMS-NPAT scores as an alternative.
Ques. What are the career options after completing B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing from NMIMS NSoMASA?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as Data Analysts, Machine Learning Engineers, Quantitative Analysts, Financial Modellers, and Research Scientists in sectors like banking, insurance, technology, and consulting. Top recruiters include Deloitte, Accenture, Amazon India, D.E. Shaw, ZS Associates, and Capgemini. Many alumni also pursue higher studies such as M.Sc. Mathematics at IITs (via IIT JAM), MFE/MSQE programmes, or international universities. The programme's strong foundation in mathematics and computing makes it a good launchpad for quant finance roles as well.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for students at NMIMS Mumbai campus?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at the Mumbai campus is optional and not guaranteed. It is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis after admission. There are multiple hostel options for boys and girls, both AC and non-AC, with annual fees ranging from approximately Rs. 2,60,000 to Rs. 4,60,000 (including a refundable security deposit of Rs. 10,000). Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after paying the admission fee to improve their chances of getting a preferred hostel.
Ques. What programming languages and tools are taught in the B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing programme?
Ans. The programme provides hands-on training in Python, R, Julia, MATLAB, SageMath, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, SAS, Hadoop, TensorFlow, AWS, and Jupyter Notebooks, among others. The curriculum covers functional programming, data analysis, machine learning, deep learning, numerical analysis, and financial computing. Students work on real-world case studies, projects, and internships, ensuring they are industry-ready upon graduation.
Ques. Can students from non-Science streams (Commerce or Arts) apply for B.Sc. Applied Mathematical Computing at NMIMS NSoMASA?
Ans. Yes, students from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) are eligible to apply, provided they have Mathematics and/or Statistics as one of the subjects in Class 12 with a minimum aggregate of 50%. This makes the programme accessible to a wider pool of students who have a strong mathematical background regardless of their stream. The NMIMS-MST entrance exam is the primary selection criterion, and merit is determined solely based on the candidate's performance in the test.
