UIE BE EE FAQs
Ques. Is the BE Electrical Engineering at Chandigarh University (UIE) the same as a B.Tech? What is the difference?
Ans. At Chandigarh University, the program is offered as a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) rather than B.Tech, but both are equivalent 4-year undergraduate engineering degrees recognized by AICTE and UGC. The BE at UIE, CU is ABET (USA) and NBA accredited, which means the curriculum meets international standards. For all practical purposes - placements, higher studies, government jobs - a BE from CU is treated on par with a B.Tech from any other recognized university. Many students from Quora and student forums have confirmed that recruiters do not differentiate between BE and B.Tech from CU.
Ques. What is the actual total cost of studying BE Electrical Engineering at CU Mohali including hostel and mess for 4 years?
Ans. The tuition fee for the full 4-year program is Rs. 9,24,000 (Rs. 1,15,500 per semester x 8 semesters). Additionally, there is a one-time caution deposit of Rs. 2,000 and an examination fee of Rs. 2,500 per semester (Rs. 20,000 total). If you opt for hostel, the cheapest option (5-seater non-AC) costs Rs. 1,20,000 per year (inclusive of mess), which adds up to Rs. 4,80,000 for 4 years. So the total cost including the cheapest hostel option comes to approximately Rs. 14,46,000 for the entire program. Scholarships through CUCET or JEE Main can significantly reduce the tuition component.
Ques. Does CU Electrical Engineering have good placements? Which companies hire EE students specifically?
Ans. Placement data exclusive to the Electrical Engineering branch is not separately published by CU. However, the department's website lists recruiters such as Walmart, Philips, VIVO, L&T Technologies, Vodafone, Paytm, OYO Rooms, Varroc Engineering, Alstom Transport India, LG Electronics, Bosch, and High Radius. EE graduates typically get placed in roles like Embedded Systems Engineer, Power Engineer, Hardware Engineer, PCB Designer, and Data Analyst. The highest package across CU engineering in recent years has been 61.9 LPA (Atlassian), though this is not specific to EE. Students on forums note that core EE placements are moderate compared to CSE, but the ABET accreditation and industry lab exposure help in getting roles in the power and automation sector.
Ques. Can I get admission to BE Electrical Engineering at CU without appearing in CUCET? Is JEE Main score sufficient?
Ans. Yes, you can apply using your JEE Main 2026 score directly without appearing in CUCET. CU accepts JEE Main AIR for both admission and merit-based scholarship. If your JEE Main AIR is up to 25,000, you are eligible for a 100% tuition fee scholarship. However, if you want to maximize your scholarship chances and have not yet appeared in JEE Main, appearing in CUCET (which is free and can be taken online at a convenient date) is recommended. CUCET Phase 1 registration is open until April 30, 2026.
Ques. What specializations are available in BE Electrical Engineering at UIE, CU? Can I switch specialization later?
Ans. The BE Electrical Engineering program at UIE, CU offers two specializations: (1) Control and Instrumentation, and (2) Power Systems. The program follows a Flexible Choice Based Credit System (FCBCS), which allows students to choose elective courses from emerging areas such as Energy Systems, Power Electronics, Instrumentation and Control, Smart Grid, Electric Vehicles, and AI in Electrical Engineering. Students typically choose their specialization electives from the 5th semester onwards. Switching between specializations is possible within the FCBCS framework, subject to course availability and academic advisor approval.
Ques. Is the ABET accreditation of CU's BE Electrical Engineering program recognized for jobs abroad or higher studies in the USA/UK?
Ans. Yes, ABET accreditation is a globally recognized quality benchmark for engineering programs, particularly in the USA. A degree from an ABET-accredited program is generally accepted for professional engineering licensure (PE exam) in the USA and is recognized by engineering bodies in many other countries. Students from CU's BE EE program who wish to pursue MS in the USA or Canada often find that ABET accreditation strengthens their application. However, individual university admission requirements vary, and students should verify with the specific institution they are applying to. The ABET accreditation at CU covers all engineering programs including Electrical Engineering.
