TCET BE (IT) Lateral FAQs
Ques. Is BE Lateral (Information Technology) at TCET a full-time on-campus program?
Ans. Yes, the BE Lateral (Information Technology) at TCET is a full-time, on-campus program. Students are required to attend regular classes, practicals, and lab sessions at the TCET campus in Kandivali East, Mumbai. There is no part-time, online, or distance learning option for this program. The "Full Time" designation confirms that physical attendance at the college is mandatory throughout the 3-year duration.
Ques. What is the difference between BE (IT) regular (4 years) and BE Lateral (IT) (3 years) at TCET?
Ans. The regular BE (IT) is a 4-year program for students who have passed HSC (12th standard) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The BE Lateral (IT) is a 3-year program for diploma holders and B.Sc graduates who directly enter the second year (3rd semester). Lateral entry students skip the first year and join the same curriculum as regular students from the 2nd year onwards. Both programs lead to the same BE (Information Technology) degree from the University of Mumbai.
Ques. Which diploma branches are eligible for lateral entry into BE (IT) at TCET?
Ans. Diploma holders in Information Technology and Computer Engineering are the most directly eligible branches. Diploma holders from related branches such as Computer Science, Electronics, and allied technology disciplines may also be considered as per DTE Maharashtra's branch-to-branch eligibility mapping. B.Sc graduates with Mathematics as a subject in HSC are also eligible. Candidates should verify the exact branch eligibility from the official DSE information brochure released by the State CET Cell each year before applying.
Ques. How competitive is it to get BE Lateral (IT) admission at TCET through DSE CAP?
Ans. TCET is one of the most sought-after engineering colleges in Mumbai, and the IT branch is particularly popular. The DSY seats for IT at TCET are limited (typically around 10-15% of the approved 240-seat FY intake, i.e., approximately 24-36 seats). Given the high demand, students with strong diploma percentages (above 75-80%) generally have better chances. Candidates should fill multiple college preferences during CAP option form filling to maximize their chances of getting a seat.
Ques. Does TCET's IT department have good placement support for lateral entry students?
Ans. Yes, TCET's Training and Placement Cell provides 100% placement assistance to all students, including lateral entry students. The IT department has strong industry connections with companies like JP Morgan, Accenture, Oracle, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra. Lateral entry students complete 3 years of the program and are eligible for campus placements in their final year, just like regular BE (IT) students. The Thakur-Accenture Innovation Center and TCET-CISCO Wireless Network Laboratory also provide practical exposure that enhances employability.
Ques. Can I apply for government scholarships as a lateral entry student at TCET?
Ans. Yes, lateral entry students admitted through the DSE CAP process are eligible for government scholarships including Post Matric Scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/EBC/Minority categories. These scholarships are disbursed through the MahaDBT portal (mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in). Students must apply online within the stipulated deadline each academic year and maintain the required attendance and academic performance for annual renewal. It is important to note that scholarship benefits are generally available only to students admitted through the CAP (state quota) process, not institute-level quota seats.
