SJMC B.Sc. AOTT FAQs
Ques. I have a Diploma in Anaesthesia and OT Technology from a private paramedical institute. Am I eligible for lateral entry B.Sc. AOTT at SJMC?
Ans. Eligibility for lateral entry requires that the diploma must be from a Government Paramedical Board recognised by RGUHS. Diplomas from private institutes are generally not eligible unless the institute is specifically affiliated to a government paramedical board recognised by RGUHS. It is strongly recommended to verify your diploma's recognition status directly with the SJMC admissions office (sjmc.admission@stjohns.in or 080-4946 6030/6031) before applying, as this is a critical eligibility criterion that can disqualify an otherwise strong candidate.
Ques. Is there any written entrance exam for the lateral entry B.Sc. AOTT programme at SJMC?
Ans. No, there is no written entrance examination for the lateral entry programme. Selection is entirely based on the interview conducted by the college and the candidate's performance in the qualifying diploma examination. Shortlisted candidates are informed of the interview date via email after the application deadline closes on 21 April 2026. It is important to apply well before the deadline and ensure your registered email is active, as all communication is done via email.
Ques. What is the total duration of the B.Sc. AOTT lateral entry programme, including internship?
Ans. The lateral entry programme provides direct admission to the second year of the B.Sc. AOTT course, making the academic duration 2 years (2nd and 3rd year of the regular B.Sc. AOTT programme). After completing the final year examinations, students must undergo a compulsory 1-year internship at St. John's Medical College Hospital. A stipend is paid during the internship period. The degree certificate is awarded only after successful completion of the internship. The total duration from admission to degree is therefore approximately 3 years.
Ques. How many seats are available for lateral entry B.Sc. AOTT at SJMC, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. There are only 2 lateral entry seats available for B.Sc. AOTT at St. John's Medical College, making it extremely competitive. Since selection is based on the interview and diploma marks, candidates with strong academic performance in their diploma and good communication skills have a better chance. Given the very limited seats and the college's exceptional OT infrastructure with 23 operation theatres, it is advisable to apply as early as possible and prepare thoroughly for the interview.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing B.Sc. AOTT (Lateral Entry) from St. John's Medical College?
Ans. Graduates of B.Sc. AOTT from SJMC are well-regarded in the healthcare industry due to the college's extensive OT infrastructure and high surgical volume. Career opportunities include positions as Anaesthesia Technicians/Technologists, OT Technicians, Surgical Technologists, Critical Care Technicians, and Pain Management Technicians in hospitals, surgical centres, and ICUs. Graduates can also pursue higher education such as an M.Sc. in Anaesthesia Technology or healthcare management. International opportunities are also available, particularly in the Middle East and UK, where Indian paramedical qualifications are recognised.
Ques. What is the OT infrastructure like at SJMC for B.Sc. AOTT students?
Ans. The Anaesthesiology department at St. John's Medical College Hospital operates 23 operation theatres spread across three floors, with approximately 50 to 60 surgeries performed every day. Each OT is equipped with the latest anaesthesia workstations, patient monitors, advanced airway equipment, and surgical instruments for safe clinical practice. The department also extends its services to procedures outside the operating room, including ICU anaesthesia support and pain management procedures. This high-volume, multi-specialty surgical environment gives B.Sc. AOTT students unparalleled hands-on training across a wide range of surgical specialties.
